William Gray was born in Yorkshire, England.

William was born in Whitby, his birth was registered in the first quarter.[1] He was baptized in Whitby on February 5, 1861. His parents were noted as lawyer Matthew Gray (bef.1819-1887) and Amelia Christmas (1832-1877).[2] As a baby he was living with his parents, sister Annie Ada Gray (1859-1928) and servant.[3] 10 years later he was living with his parents, 5 siblings and 3 servants.[4] At the age of 20 he was working as a solicitor's clerk, living with 4 siblings and 2 servants.[5]

William married Elizabeth Hayes Breckon in 1889. The marriage was registered in the second quarter in Whitby.[6] 3 years later their first son Seaton Gray (1891-1891) was born but died as a baby.[7] At the time he was a solicitor and the couple were living in Ruswarp.[8] In 1901 they were living with 2 sons and 2 servants.[9] They remained there until at least 1911.[10]

William did in 1918.[11]
