Daughters of the American Revolution
William Gray Sr. is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A047780.

"Supposedly our ancestors, John and Agnes Gray of County Antrim, Ireland were part of the 100 families that came to Augusta County, Colony of Virginia, in 1737. William Gray, son of John and Agnes, was born in 1732 in Antrim, Ireland. [1]

William Gray received a state grant of 640 acres November 13, 1779. His will [2] named the following children: James "eldest son", William, Isaac, Jesse, Joseph, Thomas, Samuel, Mary Brown, Elizabeth Raper and Lydia…" [1] Another source [3] begins: "William came to Virginia with his father as a young boy of 6 years.

By 1751, when his father died, William was about 19 years old. In 1753 the congregation of Timber Ridge area of Augusta Co., extended a call for Rev. John Brown to be their pastor. One of the men signing this call was William Gray. On 15 May 1753, William was named a Lt. in Captain George Robinson's Company of Augusta Co., VA.

On March 8, 1757 his father's land was sold and the money divided between his mother and her children. In Nov of 1759 his mother may have died, his two younger brothers were made wards of the court. Brother Joseph chose older brother Samuel his guardian, and brother Benjamin 14 years old, chose William as guardian.

On June 20, 1764 the court records of Augusta Co., Virginia show William exempted from county military levy.

By November 13, 1779 he was living in what is now Guilford Co., North Carolina. He received a grant for 640 acres along Deep River in 1779 for 15 shilling per 100 acres, another grant in 1788 for 50 acres, and in 1789 a land grant for 150 acres. All of his neighbors named in his deeds were Quakers."

William Gray was listed as a head of family in the first Federal Census of 1790 in Guilford County, North Carolina.[4]
