Biography

John Gray estimated birth year 1613, son of William Gray, Grey of Harrow on the Hill, Middlesex, England. The name of the wife of William and the mother of John Gray has not been found.

John married Elizabeth daughter of William & Joyce (Barker) Frost, widow of ? WATSON. Elizabeth, her husband and 2 daughters were mentioned in the will of her father William Frost dated 6 Jan 1644/5. [1]

John Gray and his wife Elizabeth (Frost) Gray were named in her father, William's will dated January 6, 1644. William also named Elizabeth's daughters by her first spouse: Susanna Watson and Johanna Watson, as well as Luke Watson (relationship unspecified). William also named "John Grayes owne two children..." [unnamed]. [2]

JOHN GRAY was one of the original 80 "Associates" of Elizabethtown, (vide, ante,PART ONE, p. 101) and a prominent citizen there, he came from Fairfield, Conn., where he had married before 1638, Elizabeth WATSON, widow of JOHN WATSON, the parents of LUKE WATSON, who was his half-brother,(HATFIELD, p. 62; and vide, ante, this PART, p. 721).[3]

He was of Flushing, L. I., 1649 (vide, ante, PART TWO, p. 152, and of Middleborough, (Newtown), and "Heemstead," Long Island, 1656, (Idem,p. 152).

Immigration

John Gray arrived in New England in 1638; his origins were Harrow-on-the-Hill, Middlesex, England. He resided in Boston, Fairfield, and Newtown (New York).[4]

Research Notes

No reliable sources have been found showing that Mary (Button) Gray (abt.1592-abt.1622) was his mother or was the spouse of his father. Mary Gray has been detached as John Gray's mother.
