Aged 73 y 1 m - son of John Alexander Gray and Janette Craig Gray. Married Mary Catherine "Kitty" Kincaid December 29, 1793 in Greenbriar ... Virginia [West Virginia didn't exist till 1863], [1] Father to 13 children - Asbel, Archibald, John, Mary Polly, Andrew Kincaid, Alexander R, Thomas AJ, Jane T, James M, Amanda, Allen Taylor, Young, and William H.
Papers indicate he died April 28, 1844; reading of stone shows he died l843; age 73 years 1 mo. However, stone may have been misread. Too, a stone reading: Joseph Gray, d. 4-28-1843, 72 years" was once found, but when looking for it a second time was not to be found. Possibly name and date was miscopied. from Early Settlers of Montgomery County 1817-1840 volume II pg 109 as transcribed by Walter R. Sanders, summer 1951.
In 1854 after marrying Julia Ann Porter, James' son YOUNG GRAY with his new wife, departed by covered wagon to El Dorado County, California, presumably for the recent gold rush. He was accompanied by his brothers, ARCHIBALD and WILLIAM H. GRAY, and two sisters, AMANDA F. and POLLY GRAY. ALLEN TAYLOR GRAY took his wife Phebe Peck Gray also.
His birth date is estimated and is based on his wife's birth date.
I believe the James Gray who died in Montgomery Co. between 1840-1850 is the same one who was the administrator of the estate of JAMES DUNN who died in Madison Co., IL in abt. Oct 1818. I'm trying to determine if James Gray's wife was a DUNN. I show that James Gray came from Christian Co., KY, but can't find James Dunn in the 1810 census. It's possible they were not related at all, but only early settlers together in IL. Any clues or information on the Gray family will be appreciated. I show that his father was John Gray, born in Ireland, died in Madison Co., IL and mother was Jane Craig who also died 1818 in Madison Co., IL--"the first death in the County," according to the History of Madison Co., IL."
