Biography

Janet was baptized on 26 June 1804 at Chirnside, Berwickshire, so likely born a few days earlier. The record shows her name as "Jenet" rather than "Janet". She is the daughter of William Gray and Margaret Fairgrieve.

There was then a marriage recorded on 30 May 1829 at Chirnside, of "Jenny Gray" and William Fulton. But was it this same Janet Gray, or someone else? And exactly who was her husband? Several people in Berwickshire had identical names.

Varrious other marriages of women named Janet Gray were recorded in Berwickshire: in 1813 at Bunkle and Preston to Andrew Jirdon; in 1831 at Greenlaw to George Dumma; in 1833 at Edrom to John Lowrie; in 1839 at Westruther to Robert Boyd, and the same year at Greenlaw to William Mercer; in 1840 at Coldingham to Robert Dalgliesh; in 1849 at Whitsome and Hilton to Nichol Weatherston. No middle names; no names of parents! The records are so incomplete as to make it almost impossible to be sure about the identity of any of them.

There was a Janet Gray listed in the 1851 UK census, still in Berwickshire, apparently not married. Was it this same Janet Gray, or some other Janet Gray? The census record seems to not even show exactly where she lived in Berwickshire. Next to useless!
