Biography

Lillian Gray was born on 9 Apr 1907,^[1][2] the daughter of Dolph Gray and Maggie Jones,^[1][2] in Avery County, North Carolina.^[2]

In 1910, Lillian H. Gray lived in Beech Mountain Township, Watauga, North Carolina with her parents, Dalphus B. and Margret M. Gray, and a sister. No occupation is shown for Dalphus, but the people around his were mostly farmers.^[3]

In 1920, Dolphus and Maggie Gray lived in Beech Mountain Township, Avery, North Carolina with 3 daughters and a grandson, including 13 year old Hildreth. Dolphus is an overseer at a stock farm.^[4]

"Hellie" Gray married Robert H Blankenship in Carter County, Tennessee, on 27 Dec 1924. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. W. M. Lambert.^[5] By 1930, the young couple had moved to Northfork, McDowell County, West Virginia where Robert worked as a coal loader.^[6]

In 1940, both of her sons -- Junior and Davie -- are living with their grandparents, Dolphus and Maggie Gray in Beech Mountain, North Carolina.^[7] Where are Hillie and Robert?

Lillian Gray Blankenship, a 80 year old widow, died on 26 May 1987 at Gastonia Memoria Hospital, Gastonia, Gaston, North Carolina. She was a retired nurse's aid who had worked in a nursing home. Her usual residence was Rt. 2 Box 190B, Gastonia. The informant on her Death Certificate was her son, Junior Blankenship of 317 Oak Dr., Belmont, NC.^[2] Lillian G. Blankenship is buried at the Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery, Mount Holly, Gaston, North Carolina,^[8]
