Biography

Henry Green, known as Harry was a Builder (joiner and carpenter) with his own business in the East End of London. He was born in Sutterton, a village in Lincolnshire and was a widower when he married Emma Bryant. (on marriage certificate). Emma was 24 years younger than him. Henry, Emma and their four children lived in a large house at 201 Burdett Rd, Bow, London. Henry may have been involved in building these houses? (NB: Henry's first wife was Eliza Rebecca Clark (1833 -1870). They had 4 children together. Ellen, Isabel, Henry and Eliza... see Pearson family tree on Ancestry.com)

They may have spent time at Southend on Sea in Essex. Henry's daughter Alice was said to have spent a lot of her childhood sailing in a yacht there. Alice and her husband Leonard later lived there at Thorpe Bay, Essex.

In Dec 1/4 1870 his first wife Eliza Rebecca died (Marylebone 1a 368).

In 1871, after the death of his first wife Eliza and before remarrying, he is 38, widower, retired builder living with his son Henry Edward 1, daughter Ellen E 14 scholar, his mother Charlotte 60 who is Housekeeper and Sarah Bryant 17, Domestic servant at 107 Burdett Rd, Mile End.

(What happened to the two other daughters from the first marriage - Isabel and Eliza? Eliza probably married but can't find Isabel in 1871 Census).

Sarah Bryant was the sister of Emma Bryant who became the second wife of Henry. Their family lived in Stepney.

In the 1881 Census he is 49 and a Builder employing 3 men and 1 boy living with his second wife Emma 25, Henry 11, William 11 (must be twins), Herbert 9 mo. Alice 5, widowed mother 69 plus one servant at 201 Burdett Rd, Bow, London. (201 Burdett Rd is not in the 1871 census so it may have been built by Harry).

In 1891 he is 59 Builder (out of work) living at same address with his wife Emma 34, William 13 Scholar, Herbert 10 Scholar, Alice 15 Scholar and a new daughter Florence 3 plus his widowed mother 80 and one servant.

His grandson Ray Pearson remembered that:"" later Harry became fairly wealthy and a family story recalls how as it was raining heavily he decided not to meet the owners of the Kursaal site in Southend-on-Sea with a view to purchasing it. It is now worth millions of pounds! The Kursaal was built in 1901. The word ‘Kursaal’ is German, meaning a "Cure Hall" or spa, and it seems to have been adapted to mean a place of healthy amusement. Southend’s Kursaal became the largest fairground in the south of England.""

He died in the Dec 1/4 1892 age 60 (Mile End 1c 340.)
