Biography

James Sampson Green was a middle child, with 4 brothers and 3 sisters.   He never learned how to read or write.  His early years were spent on his father's 7-acre farm in Jackson County, Tennessee, where their primary crop was indian corn.

James S. Green remained a bachelor until he was 31 years old, farming with his father.  Two of his brothers had already married by then, and were farming land adjacent (or belonging to) the Green farm.  He was the last of the sons to be married.

Parthenia Jane Shrum, who preferred the name "Jane", was living in the neighboring county of Macon.  Jane had an older sister that lived a few farms away from the Greens in the 1870's, and it is assumed that is how they met.  Jane's father had a rather large estate of 130 acres over in Macon.  Jane, being one of the youngest of 10 siblings, was living with her widowed father and three sisters at that time.  Her mother has passed away when she was 10 years old. Her other siblings had already married by then, but most were still living in the area.

James S. Green married Parthenia Jane Shrum in 1874, and moved over to Macon, where Jane was raised.   They owned farm property in Macon, and lived next to her father.  It appears from her father's Last Will and Testament, that a portion of his estate had already been given to Jane, prior to the writing of the Will.  It is unclear how many acres belonged to Jane and her husband.

James and Jane remained on that farm in Macon throughout the years, raising 6 children.  Most of their children learned how to read and write, and even Jane, in her later years, had learned how to read.

By 1910, John at age 57 was running the farm with the help of his two older sons.  1910 was apparently a rough year for the Green's and many of their neighbors.  The census shows several months unemployment for many farms in the area.

Two of their children, James and Amanda, later moved to Kentucky, but the rest of the children, like their parents, never left Macon.   James S. Green passed away in 1914, at age 71.  His widowed wife Jane moved in with the oldest son Thomas, until her death a few years later, at age 73.
