Biography

Edward Green was listed as born abt 1780 in Maryland and served as a private in the British invasion of Maryland, 1812-1815. [1] However, he may have been born closer to 1790, based on the dates connected to him, found elsewhere. Or, the Edward in Ohio could be another Edward Green.

In 1808 Edward is found on an Ohio Tax List with 2 other Greens, Nathaniel (heirs of) and John. [2]

On 9 Jul 1810 Edward married Elizabeth CRAUN in Franklin Co. Ohio. [3] [4] [5]

in 1817 Edward was a petitioner to the general assembly (Ohio). (Columbus had become state capital in 1816, having been "founded as a city" in 1812 on the eastern side of the Scioto River.) [6] [7]

In 1826 Edward was among the householders in Franklinton, Franklin Co., which had been founded on the west side of the Scioto River before 1800 by a man who awarded a lot to anyone who would build a house on the street closest to the River, [8]

In 1830 Edward is listed in the U S Census in Franklinton, Franklin Co. Ohio with 4 sons and 4 daughters.

In 1840 Edward is hh, age 50-59, employed in Commerce with wife age 50-59; 5 sons (10 thru 14: 1, 15 thru 19: 2, 20 thru 29: 2) and 5 daughters (Under 5: 1, 10 thru 14: 1, 15 thru 19: 1, 20 thru 29: 2). [9]

Edward must have died bet. 1840 and 1850, leaving wife Elizabeth a widow as in 1850 she is living with son William J next door to son John and his 2 sisters, Abigail and Mary. (See profile of Elizabeth.) [10]

Research Notes

Adams-16917 13:13, 9 January 2017 (EST)

  • No proof but it is possible Edward was son of the John Green, or of Nathaniel (heirs of), also found in 1808 in Franklin Co. Tax List.
  • No source has been found that positively connects Ira to Edward but Ira's age fits as a son of Edward; Ira was not found as a head of house in 1840 and could have been 1 of the 5 sons of Edward on that 1840 census.
  • Edward as a name appears down Ira Green's line, as middle name of Arthur who was son of John of Ira.
  • in the 1850 census Elizabeth Green's first son is likely the John living next to her (a widow in 1850.)
  • The Craun book (see profile of Elizabeth Craun) states Elizabeth married Nathaniel Green and lived near Columbus. Which is correct?--the Craun book or the Ohio Marriage record? How are Edward, Nathaniel, John from the 1808 record related?
  • Best guess at this time: John was the original Ohio Settler, with son or father Nathaniel (died bef. 1808),
