Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Anne (Green) Barton was a Virginia colonist.

Anne was the daughter of Virginia tobacco planter, William "Stafford" Green and wife Ann (Scarlett) Green, daughter of Martin Scarlett. She was born in Stafford Co., Virginia, in late 1664.[1] At about age 17, in 1681-82, she married planter Edward Barton, b. ca. 1663-1664, and they had 4 daughters: Margaret, Ann, Constantine (aka Constant) and Lettice. Although at least one family genealogy states they married in Lancashire, England, this is unlikely; other sources say in Staffordshire, Virginia.

Anne (Green) Barton died after October 15, 1700, when her husband deposed a statement of forgiven debt to himself and his wife and four daughters, named in the document, coming from Anne's mother, Ann Scarlett, and before December 31, 1700. See: Stafford Co., VA Deed & Will Book 1699-1709 (The Antient Press) p.103-104 - cited on: http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=adgedge&id=I50971 - says Ann died before 1701.

Alternate Data (unlikely and unproven):
Name: Ann /Green/[2]
Birth Date: 1657 - Place: Stafford, Virginia[3]
Death Date: 1698[4]

  1. Note by Chet Snow: Some genealogies say she was born as early as 1657, others say 1665, others 1668. I chose November 1664 as average date that fits marriage & children's birth dates.

  • http://kentuckykindredgenealogy.com/tag/stafford-county-virginia/ - resume of the Will of Ann Scarlett, Gentlewoman, of Stafford County, dated February 16, 1698, proved August 10, 1698: To daughter Anne Barton for life, slave and 10,000 pounds tobacco... Shows Anne Barton still alive in 1698... Also gives the first name "Constantine" for her daughter whereas other sources say "Constant" - clearly a shortened form of the official name.
  • http://genforum.genealogy.com/barton/messages/5675.html - Excellent resume of research on Anne Barton & family but repeats (mistaken, I believe) birth year of 1668; then says married in 1688 but cites 2 daughters born before 1685 - this was not possible in colonial Virginia in this social class. Marriage was no later than 1682. Cites various Wills & Docs. All these Source Notes by Chet Snow, January 26, 2015.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Anne by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Anne:
