Biography

John Green was a convict after the Third Fleet transported to New South Wales

John Green was a convict who came to Australia in November 1835 sentenced for Life having been convicted on 5 January 1835 at the Central Criminal Court in London (the "Old Bailey"). The ship he travelled on was the Mary Anne.

"JOHN GREEN and CAROLINE ALLEN were indicted for feloniously breaking and entering the dwelling-house of James Thomas Vallance, on the 23rd of December, at West Ham, Essex, and stealing therein 1 watch, value 15l.; 1 watch-chain, value 5l.; 1 watch-key, value 6s.; and 1 seal, value 6s.; his property." John Green was found guilty and sentenced to transportation. Caroline Allen was found not guilty. His age was given in the trial transcript as 21.

Green's character witnesses were based in East London and given that the offence was committed in West Ham, Essex, it seems likely that Green was born and lived in that area of Greater London.

Later in NSW, Green was incarcerated (probably around 1836) at the gaol in Newcastle[1]. No reason for his incarceration was given. Green is described as being of slender frame, sallow complexion with brown hair and grey eyes. He was 5 feet 6 inches tall. Later prison records stated that Green was born in London, was a Protestant and his occupation was labourer. These records showed that Green was dispatched in about October 1836 from Newcastle to work for a local settler [2].
