Oral Stories Told by Sonja's Grandmother: These are `oral history` in my family, and have not been proven beyond a doubt, but have been passed down to us by family ancestors, and there is truth to them, if not historical confirmations.
Thomas Jefferson Mason had a very interesting life. Thomas and Susan must have lived under a cloud of danger and fear for much of their lives together. Thomas`s father, Jesse Mason (m. Sally Todd) was a fugitive from English justice, and was in danger until the day he died. There were Broadsides (wanted posters) for him with a sizable reward for his capture and arrest, posted everywhere. There was a wanted poster for him still in existence in my family until 1935, when the house it was in burned. My Aunt Alice (will be 96 years old in May in the year 2000) actually saw and read this wanted poster when a young girl. Unfortunately, she can not remember the `name`on it, only that it was for her great-grandfather, and her grandmother (Elizabeth Mason Hutchinson) told the story many times. Jesse Mason`s `crime`, was `Kidnapping an Heiress, Lady in Waiting to the Kings Court`, a very serious crime, punishable by death. Actually, they had eloped and sailed to America to escape the Kings (and her fathers) fury. Jesse`s kidnapped `Lady` died, on the ship on the way here. In fear for his life, Jesse had changed his name, and we don`t know what Jesse`s name really was. Did he use a temporary false identity? Were either the Jesse or the Mason his real name? Did he change back to his real name when he felt the danger had passed and he was safe to use his real name, and his real name was Jesse Mason? We do not know. but we have never found a shred of evidence that Jesse Mason existed before his marriage to Sally Todd. We only know that he escaped and survived the King`s fury at his dastardly crime, married Sally Todd, and had a son, named ThomasJefferson Mason who married Susan Green-White.
Thomas Jefferson Mason scouted for Indians during times of Indian troubles. While scouting in the year 1836, he came upon an Indian massacre. The wagons were still smoldering and all of the people on the scene were dead. He checked the area for Indians before going back to the scene. He found no Indians, but he did find Susan Green-White hiding in a hollow tree with her children. They were the only survivors. The Indians had killed her Husband (James Claiborne White).
Thomas took her and her children to safety and they were married. I do not know any particulars about why, or where, Susan and her family were going in a wagon. Perhaps my grandmother told more details, but being young when I heard the stories from her, I do not recall more details, I`m sorry to say.
Thomas and Susan had the following children: Elizabeth MASON, William F. MASON, Martha MASON, Morgan David MASON, Cena Isabelle MASON
