Biography

Research Notes

The LDS Ancestral File lists her surname as Green. There are problems with this attribution, though, as outlined in the following email message:

From: "Tina Borrus"
To: alfreyfamily
Subject: [Alfrey Genealogy] John Alfrey's Wife, Barbara Ann ____
Date: Wed, Jan 26, 2000, 1:21 AM

"I've seen several posts, plus the information on the LDS site, that postulate that the wife of John Alfrey was Barbara or Barbara Ann Green, the daughter of James and Frances (Frankey) Green of Loudoun County, VA. I don't think this could be correct. While James and Frankey had a daughter named Ann, she was married to Elihu Harding and died before 1823, before Elihu's death in 1831. None of the other daughters' names even comes close to Barbara or Ann.

In addition, John and Barbara Ann's daughter Mary/Polly Alfrey married Fielding Green in 1812. Fielding was the son of James and Frankey and would have been Polly Alfrey's uncle if Barbara Ann was his sister.

What other surnames have been proposed for Barbara Ann, wife of John Alfrey, and what evidence have they been based on?"

James Green’s Will, written in 1788, mentioned all his living children, including the two he disinherited. It did not mention anyone named Barbary Ann. For this reason, she has been detached from her previous parents James Green and Lucy Martin.

No sources found list a middle name of Ann or otherwise.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Barbary by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Barbary:

I’m going to go ahead and approve the merge. I’ve done further research and still believe there is a second individual in the mix, but these two are actually representing the same person, even if her origins may not be correct. But since we have no further or definite information, it makes sense to merge them, since they are technically duplicates. If further information on a second person is found, the profile would be connected to a different family anyway. Hopefully my logic makes sense, but please message me with any questions or concerns.

update - merge completed in 2020; PPP removal requested/removed in 2021

Green-18649 and Green-5752 appear to represent the same person because: Hi again - if these are intended to represent the same person, please merge. From what I've been reading of your posts, they are (but her maiden name wasn't Green?). Thanks!

P.S. For you to change the LNAB of Green-5752, I'll need to remove PPP - just let me know if you need me to do that.

Hi again! Is this another duplicate for the wife of Alfrey? If so, please merge with Green-5752. Thanks!

ps - I ran into these profiles because I was trying to find the Ann Green born VA c1767 who married Joel Trumbull Gustine... see this DAR record for a descendant of Benjamin Drake Watkins, husband of Eloise America Renner, who was a descendant of Patriot Ancestor Joel Trumbull Gustin:
  • Daughters of the American Revolution, DAR Genealogical Research Databases, database online, (http://www.dar.org/ : accessed 17 Feb. 2020), "Record of Sergeant Joel Trumbull Gustin", Ancestor # A048534.

edit - I had the wrong link for Benjamin Watkins. It's right now.

update - merge completed

Green-5752 and Green-29278 appear to represent the same person because: same dates/locations & one's married to Alfrey while the other has Alrey children. Please merge. Thanks!

Relating to Unmerged Match of Green-29278 to Alfrey-71:

I've been researching the Green issue over the last few months. I have found records that suggest Barbary's maiden name was Johnson. I don't have enough information to feel 100% confident in that, but will continue to research.

I have also found a suggestion that she may have been married to a Joseph Kring, likely before John, who is listed as deceased at 45 years old.

Something is definitely off about the relationship between John and Barbary, simply because there are four children with dates of birth prior to their marriage date.

I will continue to research and keep the situation updated as best as I can.

Hi! I'm proposing that this profile be merged with the other two profiles for Barb... married John Alfrey. If your research indicates that these three profiles are not intended to represent the wife of John Alfrey, please postpone them. After reading your post, I think that while her maiden name may not be be Green (and therefor one of the profiles is incorrectly attached to Green parents), I do not think her maiden name was Alfrey either. If the three profiles are intended to represent the same person, it would be easier to work on just one profile for her. If you think that an Unknown LNAB would be better, please contact me & I'll remove PPP from Green-5752 & help with re-doing the merge proposals (with Green-5752 & with Green-29278).

Thanks!

ps - when I proposed the merge, I could have completed it... I think that would be a good idea (to complete it).

Hi Liz,

I do believe this profile should have an Unknown LNAB, which would require removal of the PPP. Once that is done, will the PPP be restored? My concern is that there is so much unsourced information about this particular person out there that has just been accepted as fact and we will end up right where we started if there is no PPP status.

I don't know enough about projects yet to be confident with my knowledge of how they work.

The LNAB definitely needs to be "UNKNOWN", but please let me know if the profile will be protected beyond that. Thank you!

Stacy

Hi again Stacy - the comment you're replying to is nearly a year old & someone else already completed the merges. I've removed the PPP, so as profile manager, you'll be able to change the LNAB. To have PPP re-applied, the profile will need to be managed by a project. It seems this person (born pre-USA Virginia & died in Kentucky) could be either US Southern Colonies Project or Southern Pioneers Project. The US Southern Colonies Project has a form to request project management/PPP - see the link at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:US_Southern_Colonies_Managed_Profile_Requests (mention you don't know which project would be best... the 1701-1776 Team Leader is the Southern Pioneers Project Leader).

Cheers, Liz

P.S. To see what PPP protects, see https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Project_Protection

Green-29278 and Alfrey-71 are not ready to be merged because: The comment posed in Alfrey-71 is taken to heart! At present only two records on FamilySearch clearly identify this woman....one is the 1850 Census, the second is a Find A Grave record that itself holds conflicting information pausing this match. More work needs to be done before reaching conclusion per to name, identity.

Green-29278 and Green-5752 are not ready to be merged because: There is question surrounding whether or not there are two Barbara Greens that have been assumed to be the same person. More research and documentation is needed, prior to completing this merge. If you have any supporting documentation, or even a good, fact-based argument, please provide.

Green-29278 and Alfrey-71 appear to represent the same person because: This ladies have the same birth, death information, same spouse, and in reading the bio's both mention the possible LNAB of Green. Clear duplicate
