Matthew Green was born at Mile End in London, England on the 14th of November 1832.[1]
He was christened at Saint Leonards, Shoreditch, in London, England on the 9th of December 1832 to William Green and Caroline Green nee Stokes. [2]
In 1841, Matthew Green, age 7, was living on Princess Street in the Parish of Stepney, London with his parents, William Green, age 35, carman, Caroline Green, age 35, and two siblings, William Green, age 16 and Caroline Green, age 5. [3]
In 1851, Matthew Green, age 18, was living on Princess Street in the Parish of Stepney in London, with his parents William Green, age 50, carman, and Caroline Green, age 50. Also in the household was his sister Caroline Green age 17 and visitor to the household, 17 year old Thomas Stokes. [4]
Matthew Green had four marriages.
His first marriage was in London. (This may have been to Mary Ann Jeffryes)
His second marriage, also in London, was at the All Saints Church, Mile End New Town, on the 10th of December 1856, to Mary Fardell who was born on the 23rd of June 1818 at Edmonton, in Middlesex, England. She died on the 19th of January 1862 in Nelson, New Zealand and was buried at Richmond Cemetery.
Matthew Green immigrated to New Zealand in 1858 and settled in Nelson.
He sailed on board the 'Sebastian' with his wife Mary nee Fardell, and arrived in Nelson on May 20th, 1858. Also on the voyage was Matthew's brother William Green and his wife Sarah, along with their children; William, Eliza, Hinds and Caroline.

Matthew Green's third marriage, at age 32, was to Mary Wadsworth. They were married at St Paul’s Church in Spring Grove , Nelson, on the 17th of October 1864. [6]
By mid 1879, Matthew, age 46, and Mary, age 33, had been married for 15 years. In March they had lost their newborn daughter, May, who died at just 19 days old.
Sadly Mary also passed away in the same year.

Matthew Green was a publican. He later ran the Star and Garter Hotel in Richmond.

Matthew married for the fourth time, eight years after Mary's death, to Anne Manders. They were married in Nelson in 1887.
Ann had two previous marriages. Her first marriage, in 1863 was to Thomas Rollins Combes, and her second marriage, in 1879, was to Charles Peter Kearns.
Matthew and Anne later moved to Wanganui.
Matthew Green passed away in 1919 at age 86.
He died at Gonville, in Wanganui on the 30th of June 1919.

In his will Matthew left his freehold property of 170 acres, at Kiwi near Upper Tadmor, in Nelson, to his son Hugh Gladstone Green. To his eldest son, Matthew Green, he left the sum of £100 which had been lent to Hugh Gladstone Green on mortgage and also the sum of £70 which was under registered mortgage with Mrs Day of Nelson. Matthew Green was buried at Aramoho Cemetery, in Wanganui, New Zealand. [1] [11]
