Biography

William is not the son of Edward Greene and Mary Tibbetts. Neither ever lived in New York, the place of his supposed birth.

William[1][2][3][4][5] was born on 5 March 1711 in Suffolk County, New York, USA. [6][7][8] in Suffolk County, New York, the youngest of six known children and five sons of Edward and Mary Tibbitts Greene. Note: There is a conflict between the death year (1708) of the Mary (Tibbetts) Tibbetts-38 as currently profiled to be his mother vs. the birth year (1711) of this William Greene as currently profiled. Perhaps he is incorrectly attached to the wrong mother, or perhaps his mother's death date is incorrectly listed. Effort should be made to sort out the correct date(s), then the respective profiles should be edited accordingly.

in 1735, when he was in his mid-twenties, William married Martha Jackson in Suffolk County, New York, and they had the following known children, five sons and four daughters:

Child: Phillip Green
Child: Rachel Green
Child: Augustus Green
Child: Pheobe Green
Child: Timothy Green
Child: Ambrose Green
Child: Naomi Green
Child: Ruth Green

William Greene of Long Island was living in Suffolk Co., Long Island, NY when his sixth child was born April 20, 1744. He moved to Dutchess County in about 1765. Per the History of Saratoga Co., New York by Nathaniel Bartlett Sylvester 1878, a William Greene came to old Saratoga Village, Saratoga, NY in 1765; whether this was the same William Greene as profiled herein is not certain.

In 1774, at Amenia, in Dutchess County, New York, USA. [9][10] when he was about sixty-three, William died in Amenia, Dutchess County, New York.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:

Greene-5008 and Green,-2 appear to represent the same person because: Failure to merge these profiles for the same individual is preventing merging of his daughter, Phebe, which has been approved, but is still pending. Surname Green(no e at end) appears to prevail among the descendants of this person, however per the data supporting this profile, should be retained for this generation.

We are missing a generation between William Greene, born 5 Mar 1711, and Edward Greene, born 1643.

The first source cited (Briggs and Briggs 1940) skips William Greene, husband of (??Rachel??) Smith. He and Smith are the parents of William Greene and Martha Jackson.

Green-4991 and Greene-5008 appear to represent the same person because: While there is some confusion in birth and death dates between the two, Greene-5008 (in my tree) is the son of Edward Green/e and Mary Tibbetts (that data wasn't imported into WikiTree).

The birth and death dates I use are from "Family Data Collections" on Ancestry.com. The differing dates (at least the birth date) appears to be from one of the DAR applications -- but is not clearly sourced.

I remain agnostic as to the birth and death dates. I am not aware of a burial record that may shed light on the matter. I would think however that the later death date in my record is more probable given the discussion of probate records on the Green-4991 profile. (If I read that discussion correctly, that is.)

The Rhode Island family of John Greene of Quidnessett used "Greene" as the last name. The last "e" may have been dropped in this line, or the spelling used may (more likely) be a function of whomever was writing the name down at the time. I notice that in Ancestry records, both "Greene" and "Green" were used among his sons and daughters.
