RESEARCH and LOGICAL Arithmetic
the year of his birth conflicts with his mother's..
IF Mary Ann Fitch was born 1716 then that conflicts with her father/mother and there is a SOURCE
1) Christening record stating that her father William FITCH was born 1709 Nov 9 and the Parish...

So that must be our starting point,

William FITCH born 1709 had to be at least 15 years to be a father, YES?
the year 1724. Further, there is a will dated 1787 which mentions his daughter, Ann Grier (GREER).
There is mention to a marriage, but no source to prove it. It gives the date of marriage as 1732, in Maryland. This makes sense, their first child was WILLIAM JR. born 1732 not 1727, as the ancestry family tree gives.

IF Mary Ann was 15 years old when William JR was born 1732 that would make her born 1717???? can not be right.

Research Notes

We believe that the spelling of his name should be SHADRACH, as most Research have listed on rootsweb.com/ancestry... There are numerous familysearch.org records for a Shadrack or Shadrick but SANDRACH is "no records"...There are still no sources that give the children of William GREER SR/Mary Ann FITCH-GREER, yet.

Biography

William was born in 1727.

Parents

  • Father: William Greer b: ABT 1710 in Gunpowder River, Baltimore County, Maryland
  • Mother: Ann "Mary" Fitch b: ABT 1716??????
From the rootsweb.com Family TREE of Ralph Terry who quotes "
ID: 1784
Name: William Greer --Suffix: Jr.
"William Greer, born circa 1732 in Baltimore County,
removed to Bedford County, Virginia, where his name is recorded as having 195 acres of land on the Staunton River, July 5, 1774 (P. B. #42, page 605).
He had 420 acres in Franklin County, applied for December 5, 1799, granted February 18, 1802, his name appearing with Skelton Taylor. (L.O.T., WT # 2829, Book 48-R., folio 445.) Nothing further."

Marriage

U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900---
Birth Place: MD -- Birth Year: 1727
Marriage State: VA
Number Pages: 1
NAME: William Greer
SPOUSE: Sarah Freeland (b: JAN 1732 in Baltimore County,) Maryland
DATE: ABT 1750
PLACE: Bedford County, Virginia

By some accounts, he was said to have been neutral in the Revolution.

His will

Will of William Shadrack Greer, Jr. (complete at the bottom of the SOURCES)
Probated October 1802 in Grayson County, Virginia (Copy of will in TERRY ARCHIVES).

He is buried in Pugh Cemetery, near the home of Joe Pugh, south of Grant, Virginia on Highway 16. The reverse side of William's tombstone reads "William Grear age 75 at death," according to Lois Temple's notes.

""On 22 March 1781, William Greer, a relative of James,' possibly his older brother who still felt allegiance to the Mother Country, was led into Henry County Court by Sheriff Hughes who had charged him with suspion of conspiracy "against the State of America." The court appointed a jury which found William guilty of the charge and fined him the sum of L500 and costs. William later came to court with William Moriety and Abraham Jones as his securities. Greer posted bond for L10,000 (15,000 at today's value) and his securities each posted L5,000 on the condition that he be of good behavior towards the American states in the future." (HISTORY OF HENRY AND PATRICK COUNTIES, by Virginia C. and Lewis G. Pedigo, Stone Printing and Manufacturing Company, Roanoke, 1953.) (Franklin County Virginia was then a part of Henry County, Virginia.)

"Wingfield's HISTORY OF FRANKLIN COUNTY PIONEERS shows that a number of the Greer family refused to take the Oath of Allegiance. According to Wingfield, some Greers fought for the British, some stayed neutral and others fought for the United States, but many inaccuracies have been found in that reference, so no credence can be given to his version of the Greer family's loyalty. (ACROSS THE BLUE RIDGE, by Billie Redding Lewis, 1984, pages 209 - 211.)

"William and Sarah Freeland Greer, Aquilla, and other family members, came from Franklin County, Virginia about 1788 and settled on 95 acres on the waters of Wilson Creek. This land is a part of that granted James Walling, inherited by his daughter Mourning and her husband James Anderson. The deed of transfer from the Andersons to William Greer is dated 4 February 1789.

William Greer died 19 September 1802, aged 75 and is buried in the David Pugh Cemetery near Grant, Virginia.
In his will written 19 September 1802 and probated in the October Court 1802 he names his wife Sarah and children: Shadrack, Aquilla, Elizabeth, Rachel, Sarah and Hannah. To son Aquilla he bequeathed "all and singular the plantation whereon I now live." Although Aquilla had 78 acres adjoining this land he no doubt lived with his parents."

(THE HERITAGE OF ASHE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA, VOLUME I, 1984; article 274, "Aquilla Greer" by Myrtle Greer Johnson, pages 274-275.) (Other information from William Greer will in FOOTPRINTS ON THE SANDS OF TIME by A. B. Cox; Ledger of William Calvin Greer, 1887; Diary of John Calvin Greer, 1913.)
