Notes on Willowvale House. With thanks to CMcG

Ballymoney townland in Shankill parish was / is just north of Dunmurry… the main road through it, is today where the Stewartstown Road meets the Andersonstown Road. The house in the photo clearly shows 9 windows to the front. The house and buildings return for Ballymoney in the 1911 census only has one house that fits that description, house 19 occupied by the Valentine family, the very next house enumerated to that occupied by Robert Greer.

In both the 1901 census and the 1911 census, Robert Greer's house was described as having 2 windows in front and was enumerated next to the only house in either census for that area with 9 windows to front. Although the Valentines were living in the house with 9 windows to front in 1911, the house and building return confirms the landholder of this property and several others as Samuel Stokesberry. The 1901 census shows Samuel and his wife actually living there. The 1910 street directory for Dunmurry shows "Stokesberry, Samuel, Willowvale" (as do the street directories in other surrounding years) and PRONI Will Calendars show the following:

Stokesberry Elizabeth Ann Pollock of 14 May Street Belfast and of Willowvale Dunmurry county Antrim widow died 1 October 1935 at latter place Probate Belfast 27 January to James Allen accountant and John S. McDowell retired manufacturer. Effects £7985 4s. 5d.

From the Northern Whig of Monday 7 August 1944: Property Mart Ferguson & Son sold for £8,400 a lot comprising the house "Willowvale" at Suffolk, Dunmurry, and 53 acres of land with four workers' houses and office houses.

Derry Journal, Monday 22 March 1954: STUART - March 18, 1954, at the City Hospital, Belfast, Alice, dearly beloved wife of Robert Stuart, Willowvale House, Suffolk, Dunmurry (late of Marlborough Street, Derry). - R.I.P. Interment took place on Saturday in Milltown cemetery, Belfast.

GRONI online has the death registered under Alice Stewart, reported age 65.

Mystery of house picture solved 20/02/2009
THE mystery has been solved. We now know the location of Willowvale House which featured in this old photograph supplied by the Secretary of Lisburn Historical Society Mr. Finny O'Sullivan.
It was indeed located within a mile of the Ladybrook area off Blacks Road which today includes three residential streets named Willowvale Gardens, Willowvale Mews and Willowvale Avenue.
An ordnance survey map for 1947 places it in the vicinity of what is now the junction of Lenadoon Avenue and Shaws Road.
