Research Notes

From the f-a-g memorial Creator, Ralph Terry
"Shadrack Greear, Sr. was born in what is now Franklin County, Virginia.
Shadrack and his brother Aquilla, left Franklin County about 1780 and located in Grayson County, Virginia.
Later Aquilla moved to Ashe County, North Carolina. Aquilla continued to spell the name "Greer" but Shadrack, thinking the name not fully accented, changed his name to spell :"Greear," hence the difference in the spelling of the same name.
Dr. Greear said the reason Shadrack changed the spelling was because a nearby neighbor had the name Green and since handwriting is sometimes hard to read, they were always getting their mail mixed up, so Shadrack changed the spelling of his name from "Greer" to "Greear."
Shadrack and his wife, Elizabeth are buried on the old farm about 6 miles below Dungannon.
(Photographs and tracings of tombstones are in the Archives of Judia and Ralph Terry. These stones give the birth and death dates as used in this genealogy.)
Death dates of Shadrack and Elizabeth Greer found in Shadrack Greer, Jr.'s Bible in the possession of Charles P. Greear, Troutdale, Virginia. Dr. Conley Greear of Ft. Blackmore, Virginia had the Bible of Shadrack Greer, Sr., until the old homeplace burned about 1955, burning the old Bible." (Lois Temple FGS 132.)

"A List of Capt. Enoch Osborn's Company shows that Shadrick Greer, along with James Walling, who was either his father-in-law or his brother-in-law, was a member of this military group." ("General Muster 1783," taken from Fincastle - Montgomery Counties Revolutionary War Records 1775 - 1783, as found in the Clerk's Office of the Circuit Court of Montgomery County, Christiansburg, Virginia.)

"Recommended to Governor as officer for County Militia Shedwick Greer, Ensign. Whyte County May 26, 1790." (SUMMER'S ANNALS OF SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA, pages 1356 - 1357.)

According to the PIONEER SETTLERS OF GRAYSON COUNTY, Shadrack, Sr. married Rosa Bourne. Could she have been his first wife, as Elizabeth Walling was 15 and Shadrack 29 when they married in 1783.

J. C. Greear lists Katy Walling as child of Shadrack and Eliz - Says she married M. Anderson and was the mother of Walling Anderson - she died June 7, 1822.

"Shadrick Greear and Elizabeth Walling had a daughter, Elizabeth." (From information gathered by Earl Greer and sent to Ralph Terry in 1995 by James McCoin, 312 Seven Oaks Trail, Knoxville, Tennessee 37922.)

Excerpts from 'The Southwest Corner' (a history newspaper column) by Goodrich Wilson --- "...Greer's store and tavern was a stopping place for travelers on the wooded heights near where the road crossed Iron Mountain, where the town of Troutdale now stands. Late in life Shadrach Greer removed from Grayson to a farm he had purchased on Clinch in what was to become Scott County. After a few years, his son Noah followed him there." (There are several writeups on the Greear family, but just general items and stories.)
