Biography

Gregory Pedigree (1677)

John Gregory is estimated to have been born between 1548 and 1556 in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England. He is reputed to have lived in Broughton Sulney, Nottinghamshire, England, but there are no records there before 1611. [1]

John Gregory, son of Thomas and Dorothy (Beeston) Gregory, married Alice _____ and lived in Broughton Sulney.[2][3]

John was a yeoman, born say 1550; died after his wife Alice who died in 1617[4]

Death Unknown

John's death is unknown, although he was still living in 1617, when his wife Alice was buried.

Ancestral files and Internet trees claim that he was buried July 1637 in Norwalk, Connecticut, having died during the Pequot Wars at the age of 89 (b.c. 1548).[5] The July 1637 date is probably based on a confusion with the date of death of his son Michael (whose will was proved on 29 Jul 1637).

Norwalk, Connecticut, did not exist as a political entity in 1637, but there was activity in the coastal area of Connecticut during the Pequot War. There are no definitive lists of men who fought or who were killed. So proving/disproving the statement above is not a possibility. None of the considerable "sources" for Henry and his family says anything about the death of John, other than he was living in 1617, when his wife Alice was buried. None make any indication that he left England. He is not mentioned in the early Connecticut or Massachusetts Colony records. There aren't any confirmed dates but estimating very conservatively he was not born after 1580 and much more likely about 1550. He would be between 60 and 90 in 1637, a little old for running through the woods chasing Native Americans.

There is a newer book that was also used to source the 1637 death: Nathan Gregory, Gregory Family Origins: Stories of the Gregory Families of Colonial Virginia and their moves to Kentucky, Missouri and Points West ( October 7, 2014), p 11.
The book is not available. If someone has a copy, a look-up would be appreiciated. B-404 17:12, 11 February 2019 (UTC)

John and Alice had children:

  • Michael (possibly); m. 4 Feb 1603 Margery Marshall. He was a glover in Nottingham. Will proved 29 July 1637[6]

Elizabeth (Brightman) Gregory (Brightman-18) is shown as the spouse of two John Gregory's:

John Gregory (1585 - 1689) (Gregory-190) and John Gregory (1548 - 1637) (Gregory-201). There is no profile manager for Elizabeth.

I'm posting this on both John Gregory profiles and I don't know which is the correct spouse (or none).
