Jewel Mays, age 92, died Thursday, January 22, 2015 at Charleston Health Care Center in Danville, Kentucky.

Born November 2, 1922 in Barbourville, KY to the late Ellen Enzer Cloud and Charlie Mack Gregory. She was raised by her stepfather George Wesley Cloud whom she loved dearly.

Jewel lived most of her life in Danville, KY where she was a member of First Baptist Church Danville. She was a loving mother and friend to all who enjoyed sitting on her porch. Those that knew her, loved her. She was “granny” to all those she knew and loved.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bentley T. Mays, long time deacon at First Baptist Church, also a daughter, Helen Jane Mays, and son, Bentley Levon Mays (Linky); sisters, Ruby Letcher and Betty Jean Holland; brothers, Joe Louis Cloud, George Wesley Cloud, and Ervin Ellis.

She has left to cherish her loving memories, her daughters, Mary (Gene) Johnson, Rosa Smith, and Judith (Jerry) Tarrance; sons, Steven “Butch” (Ruthann) Mays, Wendell Mays, and Marvin Mays; a sister, Lola Green; daughter in law, Arnetta Mays; brother in law, Eugene Mays (Midge); sister in laws, JoAnn Mays and Thelma Bledsoe; uncles, Amos Gregory and Warren Gregory; aunt, Lela D. Potter; 31 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Funeral Services for Jewel Mays will be conducted at the First Baptist Church in Danville, Kentucky, Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at 1:00 pm. Burial will follow at the Rosenwald Cemetery in Barbourville. Visitation for Mrs. Mays will begin at 11:00 am at the church until the funeral hour at 1:00.
