The superintendent and the confinee himself will have to show cause as to further detention or reason for release. The case of John Burslem Gregory, the demented barrister, was again brought before the Full Court to-day. When the unfortunate gentleman sought some months ago to obtain his discharge he failed,- because Mr Justice Hodges, to whom the matter was referred by the court, was satisfied that he was of unsound mind. Mr Weigall now asked that, the court should either discharge the patient or order an inquiry to determine whether he is dangerous, the application was dismissed. OBITUARY. News has been received of the death of Mr. John Burslem Gregory, B.A., LL.M., barrister-at-law, formerly well known in legal circles in Melbourne.
Mr. Gregory was born at Stockbridge, in Hampshire, January 17, 1844, and educated at a private school at Brighton till the age of 12 years, when he accompanied his parents to Victoria.
For some years his family resided at Geelong, and he was one of the first pupils at the Church of England Grammar School, just opened there. When 17 years old he matriculated at the Melbourne University, where he had a distinguished career.
In 1866 he was called to the bar, and read law in the chambers of Mr. Wilberforce (afterwards Mr. Justice) Stephen, whose secretary he became when Mr. Stephen was appointed Attorney-General in the Francis Ministry
in 1872. Mr. Gregory left the Crown Law, offices to become registrar of friendly societies in Victoria, and some years after was appointed lecturer on the law of property in the Melbourne University. Later on he assisted Mr. Justice Higinbotham in his great work of consolidating the statutes.
He had a profound knowledge of law, and was held in high estimation as a consulting barrister.
In 1896 ill-health necessitated the relinquishment of his appointments and his retirement from his profession. The later years of his life were spent quietly in California, where he died suddenly on January 21 last, aged 66 years.
