Order to William de Northo, escheator in the counties of Surrey, Sussex, Kent and Middlesex, to deliver to John, son and heir of Richard de Grey of Codnor, tenant in chief, the lands late of his said father, he having done homage; saving to Joan late the wife of Richard her dower. The like to William Erneys, escheator in the counties of Warwick, Leicester, Nottingham, Derby and Lancaster. By the same writ. The like to Robert de Hole well, escheator in the counties of Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridge, Huntingdon, Essex and Hertford.
[Calendar Close Rolls EIII] 16 March 1336 Westminster. To the treasurer and barons of the exchequer. Order to cause allowance to be made to John de Grey, of Codenore, son and heir of Richard de Grey, of Codenore, in the account which he is bound to render for Richard, for the costs incurred by Richard in repairing the houses, walls, turrets, mills, and bridges within and without Nottingham castle, notwithstanding that Richard incurred the said costs while he was constable there, without warrant.

Enrolment of indenture made at London on 17 April, 11 Edward III, between Sir John de Grey, son and heir of Sir Richard de Grey, lord of Codenore, and Simon de Trewythosa, testifying that whereas Joan, late Richard's wife, granted to Simon the manors of Brodeweye and Estelleworthe, to hold for life, and that if he died within 12 years after Easter next, which is on 20 April, then the manors shall remain to his heirs or assigns until the end of that term, John has conformed this deed, and as he is bound to Simon in a recognisance for 500 marks, Simon grants that so long as he holds the said manors without disturbance by the heirs of Richard and dame Joan or by John's heirs, to wit, that if at the appearance of the parties before the justices, Simon or his attorney, the heirs withdraw from their right without appearing before the justices after the first appearance, the execution of the recognisances shall cease, but if Simon is ousted from the manors by these heirs, they shall remain in force. Memorandum, that John and Simon came into chancery in the chapel of the New Temple, London, on 17 April, and acknowledged the preceeding indenture.

To William de Thorp, Hugh de Meynil, Nicholas de Langeford, William de Grey of Sandiacre, Roger Deyncourt, Roger Michel of Breideston, John Cokeyn and Robert Bretoun. Order to be attendant upon the preservation of the peace and keeping the statutes of Winchester and Northampton in co. Derby, the punishment of offenders and the other things contained in their commission, without awaiting the presence of John de Grey of Codenore, whom the king appointed with them for this, as John is detained by such grave sickness that he cannot execute the premises, as the king has learned by trustworthy testimony. Mandate to John that it does not behove him to travel in the execution of the premises.

Appointment of John de Grey of Codenore, knight, John Lek, sheriff of Nottingham, and Richard, mayor of Nottingham, to arrest in the county of Nottingham and imprison until he has satisfied Holy Church, Master Nicholas Hereford, doctor in theology, whom W. archbishop of Canterbury has signified to the king as excommunicated for contumacy and refusing to appear before him when summoned touching certain heretical and erroneous articles publicly preached and taught by him in divers places of the province of Canterbury, and as not willing to submit to the judgment of the church.

Order to escheators in the counties of Northampton, Southampton, Nottingham and Derby, Lincoln, Kent and Leicester, to take into the king's hand and keep safely until further order the lands whereof John Grey of Codenore, ‘chivaler’, tenant of the king in chief, was seised in his demesne as of fee on the day of his death, and to make inquisition touching his lands and heir.

Richard Grey son of Henry Grey son of the said John, aged 21 years on 27 June last, is his heir. John died 14 December 1392. His grandson and heir Richard III Grey was born 27 June 1371.
