[2nd Lord Grey of Codnor], Nicholas, Thomas and Henry, and two daughters, Lucy and Joan (nun). He signed the Barons' letter to Pope Boniface VIII in 1301 as Dominus de Codnore He married (2nd) shortly before 6 June 1301 JOAN DE SOMERVILLE, widow of Ralph de Cromwell, Knt., of Cromwell and Lambley, Nottinghamshire (died before 2 March 1298/9) [see CROMWELL 5], and daughter of Robert de Somerville, Knt., by Isabel, daughter and co-heiress of Roger de Merlay, Knt. [see SOMERVILLE 8 for her ancestry]. SIR HENRY DE GREY, 1st Lord Grey of Codnor, died shortly before 18 Sept. 1308. He left a will dated 90 Sept. 1308, proved 16 and 19 Sept. and 15 and 22 October 1309, requesting burial in the Carmelite Friars at Aylesford, Kent."

[CCR EI] 15 August 1280 York. Henry de Grey has quittance of the common summons [of the eyre] in co. Nottingham.

[CCR EI] 3 August 1281 Fobbing. Henry de Grey puts in his place Thomas le Chaumberleyn in the suit before the king between him and Stephen son of Elias de Withechirch, Ralph son of the smith of Watenho, William le fiz le Seneschal, and Agnes la Dame of Henove re concerning a trespass committed upon him by them.

[CPR EI] 8 February 1287 Westminster. Letters for Henry de Grey, going beyond seas, nominating Geoffrey de Shepeye and Thomas le Chaumberleyn his attorneys until Michaelmas.

[CPR EI] 30 December 1291 Westminster. Grant to John de Britannia the king's nephew of the marriage of the heirs of Roger de Sumery, deceased, tenant in chief. Mandate in pursuance to Malcolm de Harle, escheator this side Trent. Vacated because the same was afterwards granted to Henry de Grey.

[CPR EI] 21 May 1293 Westminster. Licence for Henry de Grey to demise, for six years, his manor of Hoo, co. Kent, to whomsoever he will.

[CPR EI] 14 September 1294 Westminster. Grant to Henry de Grey, going to Gascony on the king's service, that, if he should die in the king's service and leave his heir within age, the executors of his will shall, for seven years after his death, hold his manor of Toueton, co. Nottingham, for the execution of his will.

[CPR EI] 18 October 1295 Westminster. Grant to Henry de Grey, who is going to Gascony on the king's service in the company of Edmund the king's brother, of the custody, during the minority of the heir, of the manor of Burgham, extended at 27/ 17s 2d, late of William de Say, tenant in chief.

[CPR EI] 24 September 1300 Rose Castle. Licence for Henry de Grey to demise, until a year after Michaelmas, his manors of Thurrok, Ho and Rylesford, to whomsoever he will.

[CCR EI] 19 February 1301 Nettleham. To Richard de Havering, escheator beyond Trent. Whereas the king lately, because it was found by inquisitions taken by the escheator and by Walter de Gloucestria, escheator this side Trent, that Richard de Grey at his death held nothing of the king by reason whereof the wardship of his lands ought to pertain to the king, ordered the escheator not to intermeddle further with the lands that Richard held of other lords, and the king is now given to understand by Henry de Grey that Richard at his death held certain lands in Sandyacre of him, and that Henry has entered them by pretext of the king's order aforesaid: the king orders the escheator, if it be so, to deliver to Henry the issues received from the lands since they were taken into the king's hands.

[CCR EI] 2 June 1301 Kenilworth. To Robert de Clifford, justice of the Forest beyond Trent, or to him who supplies his place in the forest of Shirewode. Order to cause Henry de Grey to have ten bucks in that forest, of the king's gift.

[CPR EI] 20 November 1305 Theale. Pardon to Henry de Grey of 200/ of the 412/ 14s lld in which he is bound at the Exchequer, to wit, 100/ of prest money by his recognisance in the Exchequer in the 24th year, for his passage on the king's service to Gascony, and 100/ for other debts, and grant that be may pay off the residue at the rate of 10/ a year. Mandate in pursuance to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer.

[CPR EI] 1 October 1306 Lanercost. Pardon to Henry de Grey, in consideration of his service in Scotland and elsewhere, of all debts due from him at the Exchequer, whether from himself or his ancestors. Mandate in pursuance to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer.

[CFR EII] 16 September 1308 Guilford. Order to the escheator on this side Trent to take into the king's hand the lands late of Henry de Grey, deceased, tenant in chief. The like to the escheator beyond Trent.

[CIPM EII V5] 116 Henry de Grey. Writ 16 September 2EII. Richard his son aged 26 [born c1282] is his next heir.
