Richard de Gray or Grey' of Codnor (d. aft. 1246),[1] was born before 1198. [2]

Richard was the son of:

He married Lucy Humet.[3] She was the daughter of John de Humez.[1]

Richard and Lucy had one son, John (d. bef. 05 Jan 1272).[1]

15 May 1221 Westminster: [4] "Because in the Close Roll. The king has granted a weekly market on Fridays to Richard de Gray at his manor of Thurrock until the king comes of age, unless that market etc. Witness H. etc. By the same."
15 Apr 1224 St. Albans, Northants:[4] To the sheriff of Northamptonshire. Order to place in respite, until upon his first account at the Exchequer, the demand he makes from Richard de Gray by summons of the Exchequer for the fine which the knights of the honour of Leicester made with King John, the king’s father, for his passage to Poitou, and the demand he makes from the same Richard by summons of the Exchequer for a loan made to John de Humet , whose land he has, having accepted security from him that he will satisfy the king then.
01 Apr 1225 :[4] Order to the sheriff of Northamptonshire to place in respite, until upon his next account at Michaelmas in the ninth year, the demand for £14 that he makes from Richard de Gray by summons of the Exchequer for the debt of John de Humet, father of Lucy, wife of the same Richard, whose heir she is.
21 Apr 1226 Burwell:[4] Concerning respite of a demand. Order to the sheriff of Northamptonshire to place in respite the demand he makes by summons of the Exchequer from Richard de Gray for the fine that John de Humet made with King John for his passage into Poitou and for scutage of the same journey, until upon his view at the Exchequer in the tenth year.
23 Mar 1228 Reading:[4] "For Richard de Gray . The king has granted to Richard de Gray that, of the £7 which he owes of the debt of John de Humet, of which he ought to have rendered £3 10s. to the king at Michaelmas in the eleventh year and £3 10s. at Easter next following in the twelfth year, he may render £3 10s. at the Exchequer of Easter in the same year and £3 10s. at the Exchequer of Michaelmas next following in the same year. Order to the sheriff of Northamptonshire to cause his livestock taken for this reason to be delivered to him."

1236 : Richard Grey of Codnovre, in Derbyshire, was constituted sheriff of Northumberland. [8]
  • Concerning Richard de Gray . Order to the sheriff of Essex to place Richard de Gray under gage and safe pledges to be before the barons of the Exchequer at Michaelmas in 15 days to answer the king for £30 that William de Gray received from the tallage of the king’s demesne lands while he was Richard’s bailiff in Northumberland at the time when Richard was sheriff of the same county, which he has not yet rendered at the Exchequer."[9]
26 Feb 1248 : "Appointment of Richard de Gray to the seneschalcy of Gascony and Poitou and custody of all the king's lands of Gascony and Poitou, to hold with the issues of the lands from Easter next for two years; ..." [10]
24 Jun 1253: "Mandate to Richard de Gray, warden of the Islands, to go in person and with twelve jurors of those islands and assess the small escheats there to the king's best advantage." [11]
22 Jun 1258: "Appointment, by the counsel of the magnates, of Richard de Gray to keep the castle of Dover in the form provided by the king and the said magnates." [12]

GREY RICHARD I Eldest son and heir of Henry de Grey

[CFR HIII] 1 April 1225 Order to the sheriff of Northamptonshire to place in respite, until upon his next account at Michaelmas in the ninth year, the demand for £14 that he makes from Richard de Gray by summons of the Exchequer for the debt of John de Humet, father of Lucy, wife of the same Richard, whose heir she is.

[CLR HIII] 21 January 1227 Westminster. Liberate to Richard de Gray 12/ 10s for the Michaelmas term in the tenth year of the yearly fee of 25/ that he receives at the exchequer of the king's gift. And also 100/ to keep the king's islands of Gereseye and Gernereye.

[CPR HIII] 16 May 1226 Westminster. Dominus rex commisit Ricardo de Gray insulas de Gemere et Gerese cum aliis insulis et castris domini regis ibidem, custodiendas quamdiu domino regi placuerit. Et mandatum est Galfrido de Lucy quod insulam de Gemese et Gerese et alias insulas que sunt in custodia sua, eidem Ricardo sine dilatione liberet, sicut predictum est. Richard de Grey appointed warden of the Channel Islands with mandate to Geoffrey de Lucy to deliver same to him. William Saint John was appointed warden on the 20 May 1227.

Order to the barons of the Exchequer to permit Richard to have the aforesaid respite, so that he be not prosecuted before them, because he was not at the Exchequer to render his account on this Monday, the morrow of the Close of Easter in the same year.

Appointment, during pleasure, of Richard de Gray to the custody of the county of Northumberland; and mandates to archbishops and all others to be intendant unto him as the king’s sheriff. Memorandum, that he gives the king his service for this twentieth year, and will keep the county at his own charges.

The king has taken the homage of Richard de Grey son and heir of Isolde de Grey for all the lands and tenements which the same held of the king in chief and which fall to the same R. by hereditary right. Order to the sheriff of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire to cause the same Richard to have full seisin of all the lands and tenements of which the same Isolde was seised on the day she died. For Richard de Grey. It is written to the sheriff of Kent in the same manner, and the same Richard will answer to the king for £28 10s. for his relief.

[CLR HIII] 11 July 1246 Winchester. Allocate to Richard de Grey, in the arrears of his fee amounting to 120/, whereof the king has granted that he shall receive 10/ yearly at the Exchequer, 28/ 10s which he owes for relief of lands late of Isolda de Grey his mother.

[CLR HIII] 10 January 1247 Westminster. To John de Grey, justice of Chester. Contrabreve to cause Richard de Grey to have 30 marks out of the issues of county Chester to buy himself a horse of the king's gift.

[CPR HIII] 26 February 1248 Westminster. To all archbishops, bishops, barons, citizens and others in Gascony and Poitou. The king is sending to them Richard de Gray, whom he has appointed as his seneschal of Gascony and Poitou, and he commands them to be intendant to him.

[CPR HIII] 15 March 1248. Appointment of Richard de Gray to the seneschalcy of Gascony and Poitou and custody of all the king's lands of Gascony and Poitou, to hold with the issues of the lands from Easter next for two years ; on condition that he keep the said lands safely and faithfully recall the king's rights to the utmost of his power, and out of the said issues maintain against all men the wars moved and to be moved in the said lands, except the kings of France, Arragon, Castile, and Navarre, and the count of Toulouse, so far as the said issues suffice, if war happen to be moved against any of them, and the king will help him to defend the lands as his own.

[CFR HIII] 25 April 1252 Windsor. Concerning the custody of islands. The king has committed to Richard de Grey the custody of his islands of Guernsey and Jersey, together with the castles, rendering 400 marks every year at the Exchequer in time of peace for the profit of the aforesaid islands, namely 50 marks per annum beyond that which Drogo de Barentin was accustomed to render for them, of which 400 marks he is to render a moiety at the Exchequer of Michaelmas and the other moiety at the Exchequer of Easter.

Because the king has kept with him his beloved and faithful Richard de Grey such that the king does not permit the same to approach his Exchequer at present, order to the barons of the Exchequer to place in respite until 15 days from the Purification of the Blessed Mary in the fortieth year.

[CPR HIII] 22 June 1258 Oxford. Appointment, by the counsel of the magnates, of Richard de Gray to keep the castle of Dover in the form provided by the king and the said magnates. Mandate to Nicholas de Molis to deliver the castle to him by chirograph with the stock and armour.

[CLR HIII] 20 October 1259 Westminster. Liberate to Richard de Grey 550 marks due to him for keeping the castle of Dover according to an account rendered to the king and the nobles of his council for the time of his keepership, namely from the last parliament at Oxford to the Nativity of St Mary this year. He has the king's letters therefore, which are to be surrendered on payment.
