Elias was born about 1832 in Frederickton, New Brunswick. (Based on his age at the time of his death - 40 years, 9 months and 23 days - he was born about March 2, 1832.)
He married Eleanor (or Ellen) McCaleb in 1857, and in 1860 the couple was living in Milbridge, Maine, with their 3 year old son, at the home of Stillman Ray. Elias was a seaman.[1]
He enlisted in the Civil War when he was 28 years old, and mustered in as a Private in Company H of the 18th Maine Infantry on August 21, 1862. He was described as having blue eyes, light hair and a fine complexion.[2] At the end of that year, he was transferred to Co. H of the 1st Maine Heavy Artillery Regiment. He earned a promotion to Corporal in January of 1864, and was wounded in action at the Battle of Petersburg (VA) on June 18, 1864. He transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps at the beginning of 1865, and was discharged on June 28, 1865. [3] He received an "invalid" pension just a week after his discharge.[4]
At the time of the 1870 census, he was living in Milbridge at the home of Robert and Olive Stevens. (Olive was born in New Brunswick - perhaps a sister?) No occupation is listed for Elias and his wife is not of the household.[5]
Elias died in 1872. He is buried at the Evergreen Cemetery in Milbridge, Maine. [6]
