Biography

His birthdate was not recorded; however, he was a juror for the County of Merioneth in 27 Henry VI (1448/1449), so he was required to be above the age of 18 to be a juror. He would be born sometime before 1427.

Ellissau ap Gruffydd was the second son of Gruffydd ab Einion of Corsygedol in Merionethshire, Wales and Lowry, only daughter and heir of Tudor ap Gruffydd.

His name was also known as Elisau ap Gruffydd, Ellis ap Gruffydd, Elissey ap Gryffydd, Elissau ap Gruffydd, or Ellis ap Griffith.

He married Margaret, daughter and heir of Jenkin ab Ieuan. He became possessed of Plas yn Yale by his marriage with one of the coheirness of Jenkyn ab Ieaun of that place.

They had six sons and four daughters as follows:

  • Dafydd ap Ellissau who married Gwenhwyfar ferch Richart Lloyd of Llwynymaen.
  • John Wynn ap Ellissau who married first, Margaret ferch William Lloyd ap Madoc Vychan, of Llwyn Dyerys, and married second, Ann ferch Llewelyn Vychan, of Yale.
  • Richard ap Ellissau who married Gwen ferch Ievan ap David, of Hendwr.
  • Jenkyn ap Ellissau who married first, Janet, daughter of Robert Salusbury, of Rug, and married second, Lowry, daughter of John Wynn ap David.
  • Tudor ap Ellissau who married Ellinor, daughter of John Conway, of Bodrhyddan.
  • Gruffydd Lloyd ap Ellissau who married first, Mary, daughter of Meuric Vaughan, of Nanney, and married second, Lowry, daugther of Griffith ap Llewelyn, of Halkyn.
  • Margred ferch Ellissau who married first, Ievan ap Howel, of Rug-yn-Edeirnion and married second, Howel Vychan ap Howel ap David.
  • Angharad ferch Ellissau who married Moris ap Sion.
  • Gwynhwyfar ferch Ellissau who married John Eytson.
  • Lowry ferch Ellissau who married Reinallt ap Grufiydd ap Rhys, of Branas Uchaf.

Lloyd Manuscript says, "Elisau, who was a juror for the County of Merioneth in 27 Henry VI. [1448/1449] and held in farm the office of Raglot of the Comote of Penllyn at Michaelmas [29 September], 12 Edward IV., anno 1473. He became possessed of Plas yn Ial in right of his wife Margaret, only daughter and heiress of Jenkyn of Allt Llwyn, now called Plas yn Ial, ap Ieuan ap Llewelyn of Bodidris, ap Gruffydd Llwyd, of Gelli Gynan, and in right of his wife of Bodidris; she being Tangwystl daughter and heiress of Ieuaf ap Maredydd ap Madog of Bodidris. Gruffydd Llwyd was a son of Llewelyn ap Ynyr, Lord of Gelli Gynan, by Margaret daughter of Gruffydd ap Iorwerth ap Ieuaf of Llwyn On, in Maelor Gymraeg. He greatly distinguished himself in battle, and for his service had a grant of the Manor of Gelli Gynan, together with the grant of a new coat of arms, from Gruffydd Maelor, Prince of Powys Fadog."[1]
