Grandfather Lee’s father came from Virginia and went to Tennessee and married Mahalia Griffin. (He) went to Springfield, Illinois but I do not recall the date. He had a farm just about where Springfield now is located and that is where Grandfather Lee and all his brothers and sisters were born. The two older boys, Uncle Ab (Abner Gresham Lee) and Uncle Jim (James Tilford Lee) came out to California just about the time of the gold rush, probably just before. They returned to Springfield, got the family together and started for California by ox team and covered wagon. They arrived in California in 1852. Great-Grandfather Lee took up a ranch in the Nicolaus district as did some of the boys. Grandfather Lee had a saloon in Nicolaus and it was in Nicolaus that he and Ellen Vahle were married and where our mother, Christine Lee were born as were her sisters and brother except the youngest sister. Grandfather Lee (Levi W. Lee) moved to Pentz which is 12 Miles from Magalia about 1883 and engaged in ranching. His youngest daughter, Loretta was born here and this is where our father (Elijah Luther McClain) and mother (Christine Isabel Lee McLain) were married. [1]
Death Place: On the plains enroute to California, probably in Illinois.
