Disputed Family

Supposed parents John Griggs-129 and Martha Griggs-41 did not have a child named Wibroe. They have been disconnected.

Wibroe Griggs could not have child Ignatius Fuller in 1620, Mary Cooper in 1621, and Thomas Fuller in 1622. In 1618 she married John Cooper and went with him to the new world (of this we have proof). She would not be married to Edward Fuller at the same time. He and his children have been disconnected.

Biography

Wibroe / Wyborro, / Wyborough Griggs (Grigges) born about 1593 (age 42 in 1635 ships list) presumably near Olney, Buckinghamshire where she was married.

She married (1) Olney, Buckinghamshire, William Pierson--"William Person and Wyborro Grigges were marr[ied] the xxvth day of July Anno Dom 1609." He is presumed the William Pearson buried 28 July 1616 in Lavendon.[1] Their son, as "hary pearson" was baptized at Olney.

Wibroe married (2) at Olney, 18 October 1618, John Cooper--"John Cowper and Wyborough Pearson was maryed the xviijth of october [1618].[2] Five children were baptized to the couple at Olney.

Immigration

Wibroe immigrated in 1635. Wibroe, her husband, John Cooper, and four of their children enrolled for passage 1 Apri 1635 aboard Hopewell--She was aged 42, husband John Cooper, aged 41, and children Mary, 13; John, 10; Thomas, 7; and Martha, 5.[3] They arrived Boston in June.[4]

At the Colonies

Wibroe died, probably in Southampton, Long Island, before 6 May 1662 (date of her husband's will). She would have been 69 in 1662. John Cooper's will, dated 6 May 1662, [5] was proven in late 1662 or early 1663.[6].

Marriages & Children

Wibroe and William Pierson were the parents of one known child.[7]

  1. Henry Pierson, baptized "harry pearson sonne of will[iam] pearson" on "[xth] of Decem[ber] [1615]"

Wibroe and John Cooper were the parents of five known children.[8]

  1. Anne Cooper--"Anne Cowper Daughter of John cowper baptized the same Day [xxixth of Auguste 1619]" (29 August 1619).
  2. Mary Cooper--"Mary Cowper Daughter of John was baptized the xiith of Aguste[1621]" (12 August 1621).
  3. John Cooper--John Cowper sonne of Jhon [baptized] Mar 1 [1624/5]"
  4. Thomas Cooper--"Thomas Coop[er] sonn of John [baptized] March 11 [1626/7]."
  5. Martha Cooper--"Martha Coop[er] the Daugh[ter] of John [baptized] Nov[e]mb[er] 26 [1629]."

Research Notes

Given name. Also shown as Wyborough, Wibroe, and Wyborro Griggs.

Her name may have been Martha Wyborowe Griggs and they may have called her Wyborowe to distinguish her from her mother. (Dick Pierson)

Or possibly her name was Mary. Mary Griggs-1689 was merged into this profile 6/18/2018. (Cheryl Skordahl)

Place name. Long Island City, New York doesn't exist as a jurisdiction until 1870.

Griggs-86 and Griggs-1689 appear to represent the same person because: The same woman.

Anne B, after a thorough analysis of the evidence here and in other sources, I think you're right. It did seem a little odd that a girl supposedly born in Suffolk would marry at the age of 16 in Buckinghamshire, over 60 miles away.

Read the information at John Griggs-129 or Martha Griggs-411. I believe the absolute lack of any mention of Wilbroe in the information on John and Martha is proof that she is not their child. Hearing no objections, I will disconnect her.

I'm not so sure about these parents, but perhaps we can discuss after merging all the Wibroe's.
