Biography

Robert Hinds Grigsby was born in 1831 in Illinois, he died in Texas in 1875.

Robert was the son of John Grigsby and Hester Sharp.

He married Augusta Eleanor Helms.[1]

1870 US Census[2]
Name Age
R M Grigsby 39
Augusta Grigsby 24
Robert Grigsby 3
Ellen Grigsby 7/12
Jessie Price 10 (domestic servant in the Census)
John Grigsby 1 (not transcribed, but in the image)

Note that the census image and transcription had "R M Grigsby", but his age and the names and ages of his wife and all his children matches other US Census records. Should have been "R H Grigsby", apparently an error by the Census taker.

Robert Hinds Grigsby died in 1875, but the 1880 US Census shows two additional children after the 1870 US Census above.

Robert Hinds Grigsby's wife was named Augusta Eleanor Helm. After the death of her husband, she apparently moved in with her brother, T A Helm in the 1880 Census.

1880 US Census[3]
Name Age
T. A. Helm 27
E Helm 24
T Helm 3
E Helm 1
A. Grigsby 32 (Augusta Eleanor (Helm) Grigsby)
R Grigsby 13 (Robert Henderson Grigsby)
J. D. Grigsby 11 (John Davis Grigsby)
Greg Grigsby 9 (Guy Grigsby, error in the Census or transcription)
May Grigsby 7

Two additional children, Greg and May now show up which were not in the 1870 US Census.

"Greg" is wrong though. Later US Census records list him correctly as "Guy Grigsby".

After Robert's death, in multiple applications for a military pension for his wife Augusta, some witnesses and Augusta herself refer to Robert as "Robert Hinds 'Dock' Grigsby". I don't understand the context or meaning of the nickname Dock, but it is repeated several times in those official documents.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Robert by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Robert:
