George entered the Army at 18 and was trained in weather station maintenance.[2] When he left the Army, he joined the Weather Service,[3] which had been taken over by the Department of Commerce. George's obituary noted that he "took charge of the weather station in Nantucket in 1890 and held that post until he retired in 1938."[4]
