This branch of the family were central figures in the infamous Mormon Massacre of 1884 in which a mob disrupted a church service at the home of William and Melinda CONDER on Cane Creek in Lewis County, TN. In the ensuing gun battle five were killed including William Martin CONDER; his half-brother John Riley HUDSON; two Mormon missionaries, William BERRY and John H. GIBBS; and David HINSON, a member of the mob. Melinda CONDER was wounded by a shotgun blast and was crippled for life.
Research Notes
The listing for Martin and Rachel in the 1870 Census is problematic with the names and ages of the household members listed with a lot of discrepancies; however, their son William James and his wife Malinda, along with their two daughters, were living just next door, helping to make it more certain that the census listing was correct. See Martin's profile for more information.[2]
The 1880 Census shows Rachel as the widowed head of the household. Three grandchildren were listed in her household, but at this point it's not clear who their parents were:[3]
Rufus, age 12
Amanda A., age 3
Thomas W., age 3
