Notes
Note N102At age 16, James enlisted as a drummer boy in the One Hundred and Fifty-Seven Pennsylvania Volunteers [Civil War]. He served as a private his full enlistment, 3 years, and then reinlisted and served until the close of the Civil War. He was injured in the eye by a powder explosion. After the close of the war, he returned home, and took up blacksmithing and worked with his brother for 3 years in Fairview Township. The family then moved to Highspire, where, in partnership with his father, he conducted for 3 years a general store. They sold this out and moved to Collins Station, which they operated for about 13 years. James then moved to Marietta, Lancaster County, where he died.
