Henry Grindstaff was born about 1775 in Rowan County, North Carolina in the area that later became Catawba County. He was the son of Nicholas Grindstaff and Catherine Smith. Nicholas was the son of Johann Michael (Crantzdorf) Grindstaff and Catrin. [1]
This Grindstaff family line in America started when Johann Michael (Crantzdorf) Grindstaff, his father Johann Nichel Crantzdorf and his uncle, Johann Bartholomew Crantzdorf, plus other family members all sailed to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and arrived in 1738. At the time, Johann Michael Grindstaff was about age ten. [2] [3] [4]
A few years later, Johann (generally called Michael) married a woman named Catrin. Michael, Catrin and their growing family migrated from Pennsylvania to Virginia, and then to North Carolina. Michael settled near Newton, North Carolina (present day Catawba County) with his four sons and two daughters. [5]
Nicholas, Isaac, Jacob and Michael Grindstaff - the four sons of Michael and Catrin Grindstaff - all served in the American Revolutionary War on the patriot side. [1]
Nicholas and Catherine Grindstaff had four sons (including Henry) and two daughters. They moved their young family to the Watauga Settlement by 1787. The father of Nicholas (Johann Michael Grindstaff)) and brother's of Nicholas also moved to the Watauga Settlement at about the same time. [2] [1]
The Watauga Settlement was located near present-day Elizabethon, Carter County, Tennessee, an area that was part of Cherokee territory. The first European / colonial settlers came to this area about 1769. More followed and, within a few years, this frontier area was teaming with settlers. [6] [7]
Henry Grindstaff lived in Carter County, Tennessee until his death, about 1835. [1]
Henry was born about 1766. He was the son of Nicholas Grindstaff and Mary Smith. He passed away about 1830.
