"Last night Andrew J Griner, of Newcastle, Indiana, fell between two passenger coaches on the northward bound Chicago train when it was near High Street, and was badly crushed. From John Marshall who accompanied him on the train, it was learned he was here during the day endeavoring to sell his wife's one-fourth interest in a farm, situated near Darrtown. He was somewhat in liquor when he got on the train at eight o'clock. It appeared no person witnessed the accident, but from his injuries it is supposed that he attempted to pass from one coach to the other and fell between them. Young Packard found him and carried him off the track, and, with assistance, took him to Gilbert's office, on High Street, where Drs. Markt, Kirkpatrick, and Carpenter were called. His right arm was crushed, his left arm broken in three different places. His head was badly cut, and his left foot mangled. The doctors amputated his arm and sewed up his scalp wound and set his other arm. The amputation of his foot will be made this morning if he is alive, which is very doubtful, as the condition of his lungs prevented the use of any chloroform. He is a man of about thirty, a stonemason, a member of the Knights of Pythias and has a wife and three children at Newcastle."[9]
