Biography

Birth

Paybody Grinnell was born in Little Compton, Massachusetts Bay Colony to Daniel and Lydia Pabodie Grinnell. Birth or baptism records have so far been documented only for 2 of the 10 children born to this couple -- not including Paybody. However, 9 of their 10 children (including Peabody) were named in their father Daniel's 1741 will.[1] Estimates for the year of birth of Peabody/Paybody are especially divergent: 1684 ?[2][3] or 1687 ?[4] or 1698 ?[5]

First marriage and children

Paybody married Ruth Nettleton (1700-1732) April 8, 1718 in Old Saybrook, Middlesex, Connecticut.[6]

Ruth and Paybody had at least 6 children[7]:

  1. Daniel, b. 18 Feb 1719[8][9]; d. 7 May 1727[10][11]
  2. Ruth, b. 8 Feb 1722[12]
  3. Lydia, b. 28 Aug 1723[13]
  4. Jasper, b. 29 Jan 1727[14][15]
  5. William Barber ("Barber"), b. 19 Feb 1729[16][17]
  6. Hannah, b. 19 Mar 1732[18]; bp. 23 Apr 1732[19]

Ruth died 9 Oct 1732.[20]

Second marriage and children

Paybody married second Sarah Barnes (1705-1780) March 20, 1733 in Saybrook.[21]

Sarah and Paybody had at least 8 children[22]:

  1. Peabody Jr, b. 12 Feb 1734[23][24]; bp. 14 Apr 1734[25]
  2. Samuel, b 14 Feb 1736[26][27]; bp. 14 Mar 1736[28]
  3. Sarah, b. 7 Oct 7 1738[29]; bp. "Oct ?" 1738[30]
  4. Elizabeth, b. 16 Sep 1741[31]; bp. Sept 1740 [sic][32]
  5. Jonathan, b. 6 Mar 1743[33]
  6. Sylvester, b. 16 March 1745[34][35]
  7. Jemima, b. 16 Oct 16 1747[36]
  8. John[37]

Death and probate

Paybody "departed this life August the 5th 1767".[38][39][40][41][42] The estate was distributed to "the widow", "Jasper Grinel the eldest sone", "Barber Grinel the 2 sone", "Pabody Grinel the 3 sone", "Jonathan Grinel the 4th sone", "John Grinel the 5 sone", "Ruth Stannard", "Lydiah Spencer", "Hanah Wise", "Sarah Redfield", "Elisabeth Tooley", and "Jemima Bush". Daniel and Samuel are documented to have died before their father. It appears that Sylvester had also died by the time the estate was distributed.

At a Guilford probate court in 1767 "John Grenel minor son of Pebody Grenel ... made choice of Sarah Grenel his mother of said Saybrook for his guardian ...."[43]

Guildford probate court records of 1780 (following the death of Peabody's 2nd wife Sarah) specify the same beneficiaries.[44][45]
