Biography

Samuel Griscom, son of William and Rachel (Denn) Griscom, was born on April 2, 1787 in Mannington Township, Salem, New Jersey.[1]

He was a Quaker, like his parents, and from 1804 to 1808 lived in Wilmington, Delaware, undoubtedly learning the skills of a brickmason. [2]

He married at age 21 on March 10, 1808, at the Alloways Creek Meetinghouse, Salem Co. NJ, 21-year-old ANN POWELL, daughter of Quakers Jeremiah and Sarah (Ware) Powell.[3]

After the birth of their first child, they moved to Philadelphia, transferring to the Friends Philadelphia Northern District Monthly Meeting on May 29, 1809.[4]

On December 1, 1819. Samuel at age 32, described as "of Penn Township, Philadelphia County...bricklayer,” purchased for $4500, a 302-acre farm in East Nottingham Township, Chester County PA, about forty miles southwest of Philadelphia.[5]

in 1826 he accepted a position with the Schuylkill Navigation Company as manager/superintendent of the Schuylkill Canal, and that year, keeping his farm, he moved his family to Reading in Berks County PA, the central point of the canal. He was put in charge of maintaining, enlarging, and improving the canal and its locks.[6]

In 1831 he purchased 26 acres east of the river about eight miles upstream from Reading in Maiden Creek Township from John Rickenbacker for $2,650.[7]

In 1844, he was transferred by the Navigation Company to Pottsville up the Schuylkill River.[8]

Samuel died in Pottsville on Thursday, April 19, 1849.[9][10][11]at the age of 62. He was buried in Charles Evans Cemetery in Reading.

Ann returned to Reading. In 1850, per the census, she was living in the Southwest Ward (probably near Canal and Chestnut streets) with five of her single children: Rachel (age 41), Sarah (age 38), Samuel (age 32), Horace (age 24) and Emeline (age 18).
