Jewel DeShong-Dale, 84, died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012, at Traceway Retirement Community under the care of Hospice Advantage. A Tupelo native and lifelong resident, she was born Oct. 24, 1928, to Clifford and Troy Sarah Forbes Grissom. She was a graduate of Tupelo High School, and began working at age 13 at Woolworths and later worked for Tupelo Hardware. During her 48-year career with Hancock Textile Company, she worked a number of years as L.D. Hancock’s personal secretary and later as credit manager. She was jokingly known by many in the inner circles of Hancock Fabrics for helping Mr. Hancock keep the first dollar he ever made. She served on the Lee County Associate Board of The Peoples Bank & Trust Co. Jewel was an active member of Harrisburg Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir for over 58 years and also taught in the children’s Sunday School department. Services will be noon today, Nov. 29, 2012, at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with the Rev. David Langerfeld officiating. A private graveside service will be led by the Rev. Paul Stephens at Tupelo Memorial Park. Survivors include her daughter, Judith DeShong of Tupelo; her sister, Dot Heatherly (Roe) of Springville, Ore.; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, “Son” DeShong; and her second husband, Dr. Bob Dale Sr. Judy wishes to extend a special thanks to the staff at Rosewood Assisted Living and deep gratitude to the staff of Hospice Advantage.
