There is more than one Thomas Griswold (under slightly different spellings of the surname) in Stoneleigh, Warwickshire, during the period when the Thomas of this profile lived there. A Thomas Grishold with wife Catharine is shown as the father of a son Christopher at Stoneleigh in 1647 (christened on 6 February);[1] this couple however (as "Thomae" and "Katharinae") appear to have had children Francis and Mary as early as 1637 and 1642 respectively, too early for this profile's Thomas if he was, as estimated, born close to 1625.[2][3]
The Thomas Griswold (as "Thom Gryssold") buried at Stoneleigh in November of 1673 is most logically this Thomas, whose residence -- from the birth record of his (presumed) son -- was at Stoneleigh, but it is not inconceivable that it might have been his father, also Thomas, age about 75. However, the father is referred to as "of Kenilworth" and seems more likely to have been buried there.
The Thomas Griswold of this profile is understood to be the child of Thomas Griswold and his first wife, Unknown (Unknown) Griswold; he was likely born at Kenilworth, Warwickshire, about 1625. He is presumed to be the Thomas Griswold (as "Grishold") who, with wife Elizabeth, is shown as the father of a son, also Thomas, at Stoneleigh in 1647 (christened 20 April); Stoneleigh adjoins Kenilworth -- of which the father of this Thomas is known to have been a resident; and Stoneleigh is where a brother, Matthew, of this Thomas is known to have lived, from his will of 1701/1702. The baptismal year of 1647 is also just when one would expect a Thomas born about 1625 to begin fathering children.[4]
Thomas and Elizabeth may also be the parents of a son William the following year (although the mother is not named, and in the handwritten original -- image #11 of 79 -- the father is described as "of Hill", possibly Hill Wooton or King's Hill). That child was christened on 9 April 1648;[5] it is possible that a different Thomas, and wife Catherine (see Disputed Origins above), might have been William's parents.
This Thomas Griswold (as "Thom Gryssold") is believed to be the man who was buried at Stoneleigh on 1 November 1673, age about 50.[6]
This profile previously showed Thomas's mother as Unk. Unk., as entered by Wilfred Vasile, 19 June 2012; that profile has evidently been merged away into Unknown (Unknown) Griswold.
