Biography

Francis Griswold immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Francis was born about 1629, in England. He was the son of Edward Griswold and Margaret ____ his wife.[1][2] As with any unknown date the estimate can vary for instance about 1632 from the History of Norwich.[3]

The given name of his wife was Sarah. Her surname is unknown. She probably married Governor William Bradford (as his second wife) about 1675, and died in a couple of years.[4]

Mary Tracy was not his wife. This has been found to be entirely untrue. Thomas Tracy had no daughter Mary.[5][6]

Francis lived in Windsor, Poquonoc, Saybrook and Norwich CT.[6]

He served many terms as Deputy for Norwich to the Connecticut General Court. He was Lieutenant of the Norwich Train Band Oct 1666, and was on a committee for the Indians in Stonington, that same date.[1]

He received a Colonial grant of 100 acres May 1668.[1]

Francis died in October 1671 at Norwich, New London County, Connecticut[2][1][7] of a sudden attack of disease.

His inventory was presented 4 June 1672, and his estate was distributed to his widow, one son and six daughters.

In Saybrook the following children are recorded: (dates should be verified in records and properly cited.

  1. Sarah, 28 Mar 1653 In Saybrook;
  2. Joseph, 4 Jun 1655, died the latter end of Jul same year; In Saybrook
  3. Mary, 26 Aug 1656; In Saybrook
  4. Hanna, 11 Dec 1658. Norwich records:
  5. Deborah, May 1661; Norwich records.[7]
  6. Lydia, Jun 1663 and died in 1664; Norwich records.[7]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Francis by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Francis:

Backstory: I've done research for over 20 years and am in the process of 'auditing' against my collected sources, consensing with WikiTree, and checking for new sources BEFORE I publish end of this year. Few minor details I noticed.

Add a child in the summary......

Margaret Griswold b. Oct 1668 in Norwich.

Deborah, Lidya, Samuell, Margaret, and Lidia (births 1661-1671) Norwich; sourced from the Barbour Collection. I just verified these.

I have a birth date the 16th for Samuell but I'm not certain yet where I got it from.

Mary has returned!

Tracy-3585 is linked both as Francis' wife and also to parents "Thomas Tracy" and "Mary Mason."

I have written to the manager of Tracy-3585, offering assistance with both these problem links.

Mary Tracy has been thoroughly unproved and should be removed. The second wife of William Bradford is Sarah (Unknown) should probably be used as his wife.

Where does the 1635 birth year come from for him? His eldest daughter, Elizabeth, was only born two years after him, according to the profile.

The Griswold Family shows Elizabeth as the daughter of a Francis Griswold who got a land grant in 1636 and was a proprietor at Charlestown, where it says he died in 1652. The Griswold family, England-America : Edward of Windsor, Connecticut, Matthew of Lyme, Connecticut, Michael of Wethersfield, Connecticut Volume 2, page 13. Perhaps the daughter, Elizabeth belongs with other parents, or the dates of birth/marriage for Francis and his wife might be incorrect?
