Biography

Mary Griswold, daughter of John and Mary (Bemas) Griswold, was born in 1 Feb. 1673 at Killingsworth Township, MIddlesex, Connecticut.[1][2]

She married James Avery, son of James Avery and Deborah (Stallyon) Avery, circa 1696.[2]

She died on 26 Nov. 1750 at Groton, New London Co., Connecticut, at age 77 and was buried at Avery-Morgan Burying Ground, Groton, New London Co., Connecticut.[2] Her memorial has a photo of her headstone and links to those of family members.[3]

Note on Source Conflicts

1. The Avery source records Mary's parents as Mathew and Hannah (Woolcott) Griswold and includes "Her father was the founder of the Town of Lyme, and Governor of Connecticut in 1784-1786." Obviously an error exists in the source as Mary was born February 1672/1673 and her father could not have been the Governor between 1784-1786.

Governor Matthew Griswold was born March 25, 1714, the son of John and Hannah (Lee) Griswold and the grandson of Matthew and Phoebe (Hyde) Griswold and great-grandson of Matthew and Ann (Woolcott) Griswold the the first settlers of Lyme.
