Biography

Veteran of King Philips War

John Griswold was baptized on 1 August 1652 in Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut Colony, to parents Edward Griswold and Margaret Unknown.[1] John had an earlier brother John, who died young, born circa 19 June 1642, twin with [[Griswold-105|Hannah/Ann].

John married first, on 18 November 1672, Mary Bemis, daughter of James Bemis and Sarah (Dimond) Griswold.[2] Later, his father married the widow Sarah, so his wife Sarah then became his stepsister !

The children of John and Mary, all born in Killingworth, were:

  2. Margaret, born 10 December 1675;
  3. Hannah, born 25 October 1677;
  4. John, born 22 September 1679, and died 14 December 1679.[3]

John's wife Mary (Marcy in the record) died 27 October 1679 in Killingworth.[2] It would appear from the birth and death dates of son John, that the birth was extremely difficult and resulted in the death of both mother and son.

John was made freeman 16 May 1673.[4]

John married (2nd) Bathshua North, sometime before 4 May 1681, the birth date of her first child with John. Their children, all born in Killingworth, were:

  1. Dorothy, born 4 May 1681; [died 3 March 1690.[5]
  2. Barshuah[6], born 5 December 1682;
  3. John, born 4 November 1683;
  4. Samuell [sic.], born 14 April 1685;
  5. Lucy [Luce in record], born 26 July 1686;
  6. Martha, born 1 January 1689, died 17 March 1689/90;
  7. Joseph, born 26 September 1691, twin with Benjamin;
  8. Benjamin [Beniamin in record], born 26 September 1691, twin with Joseph;
  9. Dorothy, born 23 September 1692;
  10. Martha, born 16 June 1694;
  11. Daniel, born 25 October 1696;[7]
  12. Walter, born 7 March 1700. [Birth not listed in Killingworth vital records.][5]

John was a farmer; prominent & leading citizen, serving on important civil committees. He was a deacon of the church for many years.[5]

He was a deputy from Killingworth to the General Assembly many times: April 1690; May 1697 (as Deacon); October 1697; January 1697/1698; May 1698; October 1699; May 1701 (as Deacon); May 1702); October 1702 (as Deacon); May and October 1703; May 1704 and October 1704;[8] October and December 1707; May and October 1708; May and June 1709; May 1710 and August 1710; May and June 1711; May (as Capt.) and (absent) 1712; October 1715; and October 1716.[9]

In May 1712, "This assembly do establish and confirm Mr. John Griswold Captain of the company or trainband in the town of Kellensworth [sic.] [10]

Griswald-10 appears to be a duplicate.

Griswold-593 and Griswold-111 appear to represent the same person because: The common father is pretty well conclusive. No contradictory inforation.
