John Griswold was baptized on 1 August 1652 in Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut Colony, to parents Edward Griswold and Margaret Unknown.[1] John had an earlier brother John, who died young, born circa 19 June 1642, twin with [[Griswold-105|Hannah/Ann].
John married first, on 18 November 1672, Mary Bemis, daughter of James Bemis and Sarah (Dimond) Griswold.[2] Later, his father married the widow Sarah, so his wife Sarah then became his stepsister !
The children of John and Mary, all born in Killingworth, were:
John, born 22 September 1679, and died 14 December 1679.[3]
John's wife Mary (Marcy in the record) died 27 October 1679 in Killingworth.[2] It would appear from the birth and death dates of son John, that the birth was extremely difficult and resulted in the death of both mother and son.
Military service: 1675 - 1676, King Philip’s War (The Great Narragansett War) in Connecticut Colony. The town granted him six acres for his services in the Indian Wars.[5]
John married (2nd) Bathshua North, sometime before 4 May 1681, the birth date of her first child with John. Their children, all born in Killingworth, were:
Walter, born 7 March 1700. [Birth not listed in Killingworth vital records.][5]
John was a farmer; prominent & leading citizen, serving on important civil committees. He was a deacon of the church for many years.[5]
He was a deputy from Killingworth to the General Assembly many times: April 1690; May 1697 (as Deacon); October 1697; January 1697/1698; May 1698; October 1699; May 1701 (as Deacon); May 1702); October 1702 (as Deacon); May and October 1703; May 1704 and October 1704;[8]
October and December 1707; May and October 1708; May and June 1709; May 1710 and August 1710; May and June 1711; May (as Capt.) and (absent) 1712; October 1715; and October 1716.[9]
In May 1712, "This assembly do establish and confirm Mr. John Griswold Captain of the company or trainband in the town of Kellensworth [sic.] [10]
John's will was made 6 June 1713 (now located located in the State Library, Hartford, Connecticut. - a transcript may be found in the source following), and he died 7 August 1717 in Killingworth.[5] He was buried in Indian River Cemetery in Killlingworth (that part now in Clinton, Connecticut.)[11][12]
