William, born about 1834 in New York State, was the son of James M. Griswold and Mary Bullard. [1] In 1860 he, his wife Eliza and their young son Daniel lived with his parents on the family farm near Newport, Herkimer, New York.[2] In 1880, William worked as a farmer near Deerfield, Oneida, New York, possibly on the family farm since his parents and two uncles lived with him, Eliza and their five children, and since Newport and Deerfield are only 11 miles apart.[3]
In the 1920 Census, he was widowed and lived with his son John and daughter Jennie.[4]
He died in 1921 and was buried at the Olden-Barneveld Cemetery, Trenton Falls, New York.[5]
