Biography

Howard Augustus Griswold was born in 1890 in Champion, Jefferson Co., NY [1] [2].

Howard lived with his parents on their farm in Champion, Jefferson Co., NY in 1900, according to the federal census. He was 10 and his father, Augustus, was 54 and his mother, Mary, 46. Also living with them was with his grandmother, Amorilla Griswold, Augustus' step-mother [3].

In 1910, Howard was still living on the farm in Champion, NY, with his parents [4].

He is listed as a self-employed farmer with a wife and child on the WWI Draft Registration, which was signed June 5, 1917. In it, Howard Griswold is described as having blue eyes, dark brown hair, with a medium height and build [2].

According to Howard's granddaughter, Joy as well as the 1920 U.S. Federal Census, Howard was a minister. He was married to Myrtle M. Pierce and a son, Kenneth L. Griswold [5].

Sometime before 1930, he and his family moved to Pennsauken, New Jersey, where he continued to pastor at a Baptist Church there and lived on Springfield Avenue [6].

In 1940, Howard and Myrtle lived back in New York, specifically, Denmark, Lewis County. Myrtle's father Elmer C. Pierce was living with them also, at age 74. Here, Howard is working on a farm, which he owned, on State Road 26, making $1500 a year, as well as serving as a minister. He had a college education [7].

Howard Griswold died in 1976 at the age of 86[1]. He died in Lowville, NY, and is buried in section 1, lot 60 near Champion Road, NY. His wife, Myrtle M. Pierce, daughter of Elmer Pierce and Nellie Silver, is also buried here. She died in 1981 [8]
