Research Notes

Duplicate biographies had different information.

Born:
  • 1340[1]
  • 1342 at Castle Kibr Bryn, Glamorgan
  • 1344[6]
  • c1345, Glamorgan, Wales
  • 1346 at Castell Kibwr, Brynwith, Mogannwg[2]
  • 1348, Llantrisant, Meisgyn, Glamorgan, Wales
  • 1358 at Llantrisant, Meisgyn, Glamorgan, Wales[5]
His wife Crisli ferch Gawdyn was born in Meisgyn,[2] so it probably is not his birthplace.
Died
  • in England
  • 1368, Llandaff, Cibr, Glamorgan, Wales[5]

Another wife? The suggestion that he married a daughter of Robert de Clare seems unlikely, despite the notes about it.[10] A Google search for Robert Clare and Ieuan returned one hit, to a Geni record that has a copy of the Notes posted by the Mathew Genealogical Research Foundation. I did not catch the "Earl of Hereford" reference there, but Geni says he married "Cecilia, daughter and heir of Sir Robert de Clare, 2nd son of Richard, 4th Earl of Hereford, by his wife the Lady Amina, daughter and co-heir with her sister Isabel (1st wife of King John) to William, Earl of Gloucester."[11] The closest I could find was the Magna Carta surety baron Richard de Clare, who was the 3rd Earl of Hertford (not Hereford). He did not have a son named Robert; his son named Richard was killed in 1228. His son Gilbert, also a surety baron, was the 4th Earl of Hertford.[12]

note - the Bartrum charts (Gwaithfoed 3 and Gwaithfoed 4) are no longer online

Dawn - Vol II* chart, p 93, has no sources. A note in Vol II says sources are cited in Vol I, but the information in the p 93 chart is not included in Vol I. Bartrum notes that father of Gruffud Gethyn is Madog ap Meurig ap Ieuan (not Caradog).

(see Gwaithfoed 3 for the two Meurigs that are confused; see Gwaithfoed 4 for Ieuan ap Gruffudd Gethin & the entry for Ieuan here; see also this article (Ancient Wales Studies).
