Biography

Hiram Geren was born between 1755 and 1758 in either New Jersey or North Carolina. He married Susannah Allred. Their children were:

  1. Sarah Ann (Guerin) Clift
  2. Joseph B. Geren
  3. John Geren Sr.

Hiram died 31 December 1799 in Knoxville, Knox, Tennessee.

Parentage

Joseph Guerin & Marie Angélique Barbeau are claimed as Hiram's parents in many family trees. However, there is no evidence to suggest they had a son named Hiram or that they migrated to New Jersey or North Carolina. Additionally, Hiram would have been a highly unusual name for a Quebecois family. For an outline of Joseph Guerin's family see his entry in Tanguay.[1] It is very likely that two different Joseph Guerins are in question. So the identity of Hiram's parents is yet to be determined.

Name Variations

Hiram's surname appears as Guren, Gerren, Geron, Guerin, & Giram in various records, his first name is also found as Hyram.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Hiram by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Hiram:

The information I have supports Joseph's birth place was: Charlesborg, Quebec, Canada. The situation is as follows:

Quebec, Canada, Vital and Church Records (Drouin Collection), 1621-1968 Ancestry.com Ancestry.com Operations, Inc. 2008 Provo, UT, USA Family Search.com M1840 FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:2:77TD-K9K5?cc=1913388&wc=MXM9-TP6%3A195534501 ,

The information also shows his name as Joseph Guerin. Additional support information gives his father as have lived and died in Charlesborg.

The link leads to some burial records for some Smiths... Are you suggesting that Hiram's full name was Joseph Hiram/Hiram Joseph? I know there is a Guerin family of Charlesborg, Quebec & another of Morris, New Jersey.

My information shows Joseph & Marie Barbeau as Hiram's parents, though there does seem to be some timing issues if Hiram was born in 1758. Tanguay gives Joseph Guerin b.1705 m. 3 May 1734 Angelique Barbot and children Marie-Joseph b. 1734, Joseph b. 1736, Rene 1738, Charles-Joseph 1743, Marie-Louise b. 1745, & Marie Gertrude 1749. The other Guerin family of Morristown, New Jersey provides another set of issues that I don't know enough to make an assessment about. Thoughts?

I agree with the information in the profiles relate to the same person. However, as mentioned below, the spelling of the name and birth places are different.

Would you happen to have some sources that would throw light on Hiram's birthplace? And would you be willing to merge the profiles so we can concentrate research efforts?

merge is ready, have you and/or Johnny Hankins decided on the correct spelling or birthplace?

I've decided to use Geren as the surname and the birthplace has been cleared for the present. Just updated the profile with more sources and notes.
