Historical Biographical Excerpt

Shoreview Press by Michelle Miron Managing Editor

" The family’s American legacy started when the younger Guerins’ great-grandfather, fur trader Vital Guerin (1812-1870) immigrated to St. Paul from St. Remi, Canada, in 1832 (Vital was also spelled Vetel, Vitel or Vetal depending on the source).

He reportedly became the city’s first millionaire (sources say he later was defrauded of his money) and donated land for what would become the Ramsey County Court House, the county jail, St. Paul City Hall and the St. Paul Cathedral.

His son Vital Guerin Jr. emigrated from Canada to St. Paul later on and settled in Little Canada in 1890, setting up a blacksmith operation near 104 E. Little Canada Rd. that would burn down in 1912.

He and his wife were the parents of David C. Guerin (1878-1972), who established the Guerin Texaco station in 1923 on the northwest corner of Rice Street and Owasso Boulevard." [6]
