Clude Guerin came to Canada in 1694 under the command of M. Noyan. Claude Guerin was a french soldier who came to fight in the French and Indian wars. After the war was over, he received a plot of land in payment for his services. His neighbors included a widow woman whose property included the primary source of water in the area, a natural spring. He married the widow. Guerin changed his name to Claude Guerin dit Lafontaine "Guerin keeper of the fountain (spring)". That was the family name for a few generations. The family grew quite large but a feud developed for reasons unknown. Half the family wouldn't talk to the other half and eventually they split the name between them. Half becme the Guerins and the other half became the Lafontaines. Claude is buried in Laprairie, Quebec, Canada

I believe that the marriage occurred in 1697, not 1696 as stated in the record at Généalogie Québec. The text in the record states "mil six cens novante et sept". The priest's signature at the end of the record shows "1697". The volume of record indices hosted at familysearch.org also lists the marriage as occurring in 1697. I sent a message to GQ with my opinion.

La Fontaine name does not stem from the property Jeanne Cusson had. It stems from his being a soldier, it was a practice of the time to give a different name to each soldier by which he was known during his military service. Many kept the extra names after their term of service was ended, these are some of the dit names found all over the records. He got married using Claude Guérin dit Fontaine as his full name.
