The son of August Gundersen and Inga (Halvorsen) Gunderson, both Norwegian immigrants. Martin was born in Barago, Michigan in 1894; his father was a "woodsman."[1][2] Martin was the oldest child in a large family that included a set of twins and a set of triplets:
Albert (1897-1969)
Elsie (1899-)
Theodore (1904-1930)
Margaret (1907-)
Adolph (1907-1936)
Harold (1909-)
Ida Mary (1909-1967)
Edward (1909-1947)
Alvin (1913-1999)
Military Service
Martin registered for the draft when he was 23, in 1917.[3] His draft card described him as a man of medium height and build, with brown hair and light blue eyes. He was accepted into the United States Army as a Private First Class in the 55th Infantry, stationed at Fort McArthur, Texas.[4] There is no evidence that he served overseas in World War I; he was discharged on May 10, 1918. Martin also registered in 1942 for the World War II draft, but he did not serve.
Marriage, Family and Work
After his service, Martin returned to Onontagon County and took work, along with his younger brother, Albert, at a logging camp. They worked for Gauthier's Company, and lived at the camp.[5] Later that year, Martin married Alvina (McMeeken) Gundersen in Trout Creek, Michigan on November 10, 1920.[6] They began their family and made their home in Powell, in Marquette County, Michigan, where Martin continued to work as a sawyer at the lumber mill.[7] Theirs was a large household: four of his brothers lived with the family, three of them also working at the lumber yard; his divorced sister lived with the family, along with her four young children; and Alvina and Martin had four young sons of their own in 1940, all under the age of ten.[8]
Merlin M. (1929-1997)
Calvin Leroy (1923-1962)
Leland Richard (1927-2007)
Lyle (1929-)
Caroline (1939)
Martin and Alvina divorced in the late 1930s, although no record of the divorce is found. Martin married again, marrying Pearl Elizabeth Barclay (1905-2003), a hotel keeper in Big Bay, in Marquette, Michigan on August 10, 1939. He was 44 and she was 34, but she had been married three times before.[9] She was first married to Joseph Wasser, marrying in Chicago in 1920; she next married Arno Dorow, marrying in Marquette, Michigan in 1926; she married Henry John Johnson in 1929, also in Marquette. Martin and Pearl lived in Marquette, where Martin was head sawyer at a lumber company there.[10]
Death and Burial
Martin passed away at the age of 80 in Bloomfield, Michigan in 1974, having last resided in Powell.[11][12] He and Pearl are buried at Big Bay Cemetery in Big Bay, Michigan.[13]

Harold Gunderson, Martin's sibling, was born and also died in 1906. It appears there were 2 sets of twins in the family. Alvin, Martin's sibling, was born May 30, 1912. I know this because she died following childbirth on May 31, 1912.
Martin's military service included 18 Aug 1918 to 18 June 1919 outside the U.S. according to his Discharge dated 26 June 1919.
Martin was divorced from Alvina in 1932 so Caroline is not his daughter.
I am Martin and Pearl's daughter and I have documents to prove all of the above.
