Biography

Scottish flag
Matilda (McIlroy) McMillan was born in Scotland.

Matilda McIlroy was born on May 12, 1894 in Glasgow Maternity Hospital, and was the illegitimate daughter of Margaret McIlroy.[1]

Matilda was put up for adoption and was raised by a Robert and Mary Brown of Renfrew.[2] Her time with this family was reportedly very happy.[3]

For some reason, Matilda was taken back and raised by her mother and step-father in Glasgow, where she grew up in a poorer household with strict parents. She wasn't allowed toys and when she was older, wasn't allowed to leave the house in the evening.[3]

She married James McMillan on March 15, 1922 in Glasgow[4] and had five children; James, Nathaniel, Hugh, Margaret and Yolanda.

Matilda worked as a cleaner at a cinema in Glasgow and also ran a shop from her living room.[3]

Matilda was widowed when her husband James died in 1957. In the 1980s, she moved down to Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, England to live close to her daughter Yolanda.[3] She died on May 21, 1989 in Coneygree Lodge, Stanground when she was 95 years old. Her cause of death was listed simply as "old age".[5]
