Avis married first Reuben Nichols. Avis married second John Hinton, son of Peter Henton and Mary Scothorn, on July 4, 1843 in Monroe Co., Virginia.
Avis died on January 22, 1901 in Hinton, West Virginia, at the age of 91. She was interred in Hinton Hilltop Cemetery.
She was the owner of the tract of land on which the city of Avis was built, and she made her will in 1861, devising her property to her three sons, Joseph Hinton, Silas Hinton and William Hinton, Jr.
